Chess is NOT a sport!!!

Chess is a game.
Wow, for cheater's time on chess.com, that is a pretty deep sentiment. Buy this man a drink!

Chess is a mental sport!
Chess tournaments and Matches are hard core physical activity!
The Botvinnik, Petrosian, Karpov lost about 12 pounds during their Chess Matches!
Fisher lost his Ego, during 1972 last Chess Match!
You have to be Fit very well physically and mentally, to keep the fight!
The Chess is full of the burning flame energy!

LOL, Tunatin gets the award for perfectly timed joke haha.

Chess definitely has a huge overlap with 'sport' if one engages in competitive chess...those who never ventured into the tournament arena have no idea of the nervous energy expended in such games - this is understandable, just as the guys at school who try to poke fun at the mathematical kid can never appreciate the deep beauty of mathematics.
Chess is a different kind of sport from the ones we played as children. It is not a 'contact' or 'activity' sport, for sure. Neither is archery, darts, or pistol shooting - but these have been treated as sports for many years now.
Why the big deal? Because governments often support any 'sporting activity' because I guess there are votes in appearing to support the popular sports. This is why chess needs to become accepted as a sport. High ranking players from many western countries get no financial support even when representing their country at the Chess Olympiads! This has to change.

LOL. I for one love the 'game' of chess, but it is no more a true 'sport' than Poker, Euchre, or even Billiards - all of which can be observed on several 'sports' networks.
It is, at least, a 'direct competition' unlike some so-called sports such as (lmao) figure skating, which I would define as a 'physical talent-show' since the competitors do NOT determine their fates directly upon one another, but rather are 'judged'. So can 'physical activity' really be the heaviest defining factor in sport? Certainly not.
And the 'Olympics' are a really bad, old joke! Many non-sports happening there, I'm afraid. But to the point....... I love sports and I love chess; but chess is NOT a sport. I wanted to weigh in on this mainly just because I'm brand new to this site and felt like participating, not to induce fits or raise ires lol. Thank-you.

Kasparov - swimming. Fischer - boxing. They said the same thing about being physically prepared before a match or tournament.
dwaxe, that video is very, extremely funny.

I've seen *Scrabble* on ESPN.
Thus, at the very least, it seems much more sport-worthy than things that have been aired on a sports TV station.

Spassky was considered for 100 meters sprinter career, as a runner!
Fisher was very fit!
Kasparov was considered for a football career! Very fit!!

I appreciate the credentials, but that is my point...... physical activity is only a dimension of sport. I don't doubt the long gruelling tournaments, anxiety and all that great stuff - they are quite prevalent in long Poker Tournaments as well. I actually AGREE that chess is more physically demanding than most would concede, but again my position is clear in that true SPORT is not defined by fitness and endurance alone. Basically, a chess player is not an athlete.
And tell me, why do some of you call it "the Chess" lol? Nobody refers to ANY particular sport in this manner, such as "the hockey" or "the lacrosse" etc. Just thought it odd and ironic ;-)
