Chess is not fun

If chess ever stops being fun for me, I won't play any longer. What's the point if it isn't fun?

Conflagration_Planet

I think it would be funner if I was better, but as crappy as I am, no.

There's a difference between fun and frivolious.

Something can be taken quite seriously and still be a source of enjoyment, which is part of the definition of 'fun.' But if one takes something seriously, it can't be enjoyed frivoliously by definition.

Going from 1200 - 1600 was a lot of fun.

Getting from 1700 - 1800 is now starting to feel like serious hard-work, and a lot of the things I saw as fun elements (easy tactics, quick mates, etc) are thin on the ground, so yes, from that perspective it is less fun in a lot of ways.

No, the more you learn and the better you get, the more fun you can have. I remember being shown the Benoni years ago by a guy at the Negaunee Chess Club in Michigan and I was like, I'd never play that. And what am I doing now...learning the Benoni! The better a player gets, the more appreciation he or she can have from the game.

At low level it was a game. At my level (for me my max limit) it's suffering and makes me not want to play chess

Perhaps an interlude of tiddlywinks may help until you can come back refreshed.

No, I don't think playing or learning chess is fun. At all. I am in that horrible phase where I only know the basics and have learned about the principles, but have not yet been able to implement them. Having never won a single game, I can honestly say that chess is no fun. I hope to change this.

Actually, it just means that they 'do' mean 'something'.

Logic is a lot more important than grammar.

I think it's more fun when you are improving than when you are stuck at a plateau. The following plateaus are meant to exist which are hard to get past: 1500, 1900 (I was stuck there for ages but busted it eventually), 2200 and 2600 (not that any of us will get near this one).

Personally I don't know nothing about anything.

How's your coaching sessions going?

netzach

If your finding most of the chess you are playing a strain the solution is to play a separate type of chess purely for fun ?  (Bltz for instance) I deliberately play some chess960 just for fun.

Conflagration_Planet

I wouldn't want to be taught chess by some fool who didn't even like it themselves.

xtophr1

Does that even happen?

I'm having a ball over here

Netzach...me too.  I am not a very high rated player (if you look at my score that is) but i love to change pace and 960 does that.  Gives me a sort of equal stance at start like playing football in the rain.  Or perhaps i just have high hopes.....

floatingeye

Honestly I really just hate playing on chess.com.

As the skill level increases the fun level decreases. What do you think?

I find the exact opposite is true

Lou-for-you

It is fun. Chess is too difficult to master, so it can only be fun.
