Ratings fluctuations........I was at a high of 1500 in speed-o chess about a year ago, but now, I'm bumbling around the 1300 mark. Maybe its the alcohol ?!

Snobbery / Looking down upon......I wouldn't look down upon someone until after the game...heh heh. I've been surprised unpleasantly by lower rated opponent's before and so I'd actually rather not be able to see their rating until after the game if that's possible.

Why do you have so many threads on manners and people thinking they are better than you.  I don't think the problem is with the other people.  The problem is you have an inferiority complex.

You sound like my councilor lol! Think the bee in my bonnet may stem from that subconciously but that aside I have got a valid point...

I see and know all lily ;D

As to the fact that you have a valid point.

Well I don't think you do.  I would consider myself a decent player.  But, that doesn't make me a better person than people of lesser skill.  If I beat someone they can still beat me the next game.  There was a 2000 rated player that was kind enough to play with me.  He destroyed me the first game(so at that point I am sure he was more valuable a person than I am).  But, the second game I won(granted he was winning most of the game and made a gross oversight.  BUt, a win nonetheless).  So now I can say I am a better person than him and I won't talk to him.

Or after the game I can tell him that I got really lucky, ty for the games, and make a friend request with a note saying I would like to go over the game sometime if he would like.

In the world there are good and bad people.  Be one of the good and don't let the "bad" or people you perceive as bad to get to you and who knows you might find a few more friends on here that you might not have thought you would have previously.

 Hi omnipresent one : ^ )

I agree with ya. I'm trying to play devils advocate here. Although I moan in the forums, I try my best to be polite to everyone I play, Regardless. I hope my integrity is intact.

Rude people don't keep me awake at night and I am coming around to the fact that just coz people don't like to talk , doesn't mean that they are "bad people" However (and don't bite my head off here) MANNERS COST NOTHING! NOTHING AT ALL... : ^ ) LOL!!

lol

You said it.

You have just confirmed my point, my dear.  Snobbery : ^ ) You see your self as better... Bet your car is a penis extention LOL!

Who's being rude now?  What does his comment have to do with his car or his penis?

IRL, I refuse to talk to anyone with an elo below 1800.  It is REALLY hard to order pizza.

I don't see any reason why chess players would be any different.

Does the status i.e. rating of an opponent , determined ones manners?

Since I broke the 1000 rating barrier ( which may fluctuate, in fact it inevitability will) I have found silent opponents(rude people) suddenly have the inclination to conserve . Is this an indication of snobbery in the ranks? I certainly do not think I'm any less of a person than an opponent with a 2000 rating , just because that individual is much better at chess than me.

Do you get your self esteem from your rating and do you write people off because they are lower rated players?

I am in no way addressing all of the wonderful people who have really helped me and encouraged me and been fab, by the way ...

I'm talking about the unusual here, which is sadly often...

I strongly doubt there is a correlation between rating and demeanor.

if you chat with someone during a game, you may offend someone and be open to a "report abuse" complaint.....i like an opponent who keeps his/her/its mouth shut......that's just my opinion, no offense meant.....

Not a bad point. So, in order to be respectful and not open to complaint, you need to say a little bit so as to acknowledge the presence of the counterparty, but not too much, lest you bother the counterparty, unless they seem the talkative type, but only if you're in the mood to also talk.

Gotcha.

I'm suprised you eat pizza... I like ELO, though, I saw them live at the Phil, a tad crinkely but very good...

Aloha, Lily, don't take things so personal.  Here in Hawaii we try to have what we call the "Aloha Spirit": Be kind and considerate, polite, friendly, and helpful whenever possible and. if somehow there is no "Aloha spirit" in the other person, just let it go.  I dont believe it's worthwhile to let yourself become upset or hurt or troubled by such negative behavior on the part of some members of our chess community, deliberate or not.  Put that wasted energy into your game and the study of chess and raise your rating from wherever it is, one point at a time, if necessary, toward a goal, and feel good about how you are improving in this wonderful game of chess.
