Chess.com's Computer...

I have a simple Chess program on my Mac. Says it was written in 1992. It's not even on it's max setting and I played the Chess.com computer on Hard (2000+) the other day when the servers here were offline, and all three games this simple little Mac program killed Chess.com's. How can that be?

I've never seen anyone be able to come close to beating this program. And speaking of computer programs, which Chess engines are considered the strongest and which are considered the weakest?

No one?

Hi Van,

I can't answer which engines are considered the weakest.

However, the three strongest engines are probably Houdini 1.5, Deep Rybka 4, and Stockfish 2.1, in that order.  Houdini and Stockfish are free.  In fact, Stockfish is open source.

To use any of these engines you will need an interface, aka a GUI.  My favorite interface is WinBoard, but Arena and the Fritz software are popular too.

You wrote, "I've never seen anyone come close to beating this program."  Which program are you referring to... the program you describe as the simple chess program on your Mac?  If it was written in 1992, any of the three engines I mentioned would absolutely destroy it, probably every single game.  The above three engines are stronger than the Deep Blue program that defeated Kasparov in 1997.  (Chess engines and chess programming have come a long way in 14 years.)

By the way, WinBoard and Arena, the two interfaces I mentioned, are also free.  What is also free are dozens of different opening books you can download, and the Gaviota endgame tablebases that both Houdini and Stockfish support.

Houdini crushed Rybka in their recent match. You can go to Chessbomb and see the gamesSmile

Awesome responses. I have a Mac and I tried to download Stockfish and it instantly closes for some unknown reason. I'd like to try downloading any others to see if they will work.

But if what was said is true, how can this old program beat Chess.com's--3 times? How is that possible? And this program is only set to medium strength.

Please suggest one that will work with Mac.

Oh, and another thing about this Mac-based program; everytime I get it to play itself, it draws, not loses like some programs I've had do. Interesting.

It doesn't say; it's a no-name that came with the computer. I can't find a name.

When Chess.com servers were down the other day it offered to let me play a game of chess against an approx 1600 strenght.  I defeated it--and I didn't have to work for it either.  My conclusion is that there was something funny with the engine--it was not operating at the strenght it claimed to be.  This is not the first post I've seen today of an underdog beating the chess.com engine when the servers were down.

My program just beat the computer again. This is the 4th time!

You're right; for whatever reason, it's not playing as it should.
