That's not true
K+Q mates can also occur with the K on the 6th ramk, or amywhere on the c or f files.
I'm not sure what Philidor's positions you are talking about, but a least the smothered mate has pawn involved too.

What I meant by the third rank was a rank or file two ranks or files adjacent to the edge.
I am talking about the Phillidor positions listed on wiki: Draw with Rook vs Rook and Pawn, Win with Queen vs Rook and Win with Rook and Bishop vs Rook.
Every stalemate ends in a draw...
Coincidence?? or controversy...?
These are two that I have discovered. The first one is that all three of Philidor's Positions involve the defender having just a rook. The other is that in king and queen vs king, checkmates always happen with the king on the third rank. What others have you come up with?
