Darkmode screwed by new layout

Go away, new layout!

You are screwing up my darkmode on the phone.

What's the point of having darkmode for longer lasting phone operation, if a website drains the battery with enforcing more white?

It doesn't even look better from a layout design point of view, even without any power-saving considerations.

Please tell me this was just a test layout to probe users' reactions.

Layout where? As far as I can see nothing major has changed

Ok. I probably need to retract my complaint from here.

Something changed between the layout colors an hour ago and now.

It seems DuckDuckGo browser has changed page layout displaying and doesn't handle chess.com anymore correctly with darkmode.

FIirefox seems to continue handling dark mode correctly for this site. So the problem might come from a browser update, instead.

Nevertheless, thanks for the nearly instantaneous reaction!

I know some browsers have their own darkmode settings that may override or interact poorly with other darkmode code. There may be a way to disable it for individual sites in the browser settings.

Gurokura

Thanks for the hint!

Duckduckgo doesn't seem to have that option, at least not for Android. Seems to me I'll play chess on Firefox then.

Update: now also Firefox has the same behavior, i.e. a lot more white than before, basically every text background is now white.

Unfortunately, neither Firefox nor Duckduckgo on Android have settings for handling individual sites in a different way.

Martin_Stahl

Maybe an Android setting got changed?

Gurokura

That could also be. Just strange that it did happen with a delay in both browsers. But maybe browsers got updated at different times. Difficult to say with that automated updating.

Up to now, it is also only affecting chess.com. Other sites I visit are still displayed correctly in dark mode.

Martin_Stahl

I use mobile Chrome and don't use darkmode, except for testing. happy

Gurokura

That's another solution. wink

There should be an inverse-color function on Android.

Gurokura

Indeed, it is a Samsung phone.

Good guessing!

Hi and thanks for the hint!

Unfortunately, on my Smartphone just that button is lacking, i.e. not displayed on my screen.

Only if I choose to display "Desktop site", then that button is displayed. But, of course, Desktop version of chess.com on a Smartphone comes with its own set of problems.

Nevertheless, thanks again! It's nice to know that comments are read even some time after having them posted.

Maybe I should update my initial question and close it as in the meantime, probably with some of the Samsung updates, the problem has luckily disappeared.
