Disabling chat settings not working

Sort:
albacored

For live chess, I turned off both sets of chat setting that I can see, thinking that would mean people couldn't send me chat messages during games. However, I still get both chat requests, and other chat messages without the request icon. Sometimes the emoticons flash up also. This is via a browser. I've logged out/in, refreshed, cleared cookies, restarted etc., to no effect. Can disable chat in the game itself via the x button, but then you need to do it every time. Any other solutions? The messages are all dumb and I could do without them. Thanks.

I wouldn't say all the messages are dumb; I have had some very rewarding conversations in chat.  But there are times where I want to just focus on the game too.

See below in your settings: Live Chess: Game chat needs to be set to Friends Only or Nobody for you to fix this and not receive any chat messages.

Thanks but I've set both of those to Nobody and still get messages. I mostly play blitz so no-one has time to say anything useful perhaps.

That's interesting.  It is kind of annoying to have to hit disable chat every time if you want that.

Did you submit a help ticket to support?

albacored

I did submit a ticket, had some response, but not for a bit. Guess they're looking into it? Usually people complain they can't turn chat on!

eagle-26

Yeah they should be looking into it.  And the more people that complain about something like this, the higher it gets on their list of priorities I guess.  Hopefully it fixes itself for you.  Feel free to reach out in the future if there's anything I can do, or if nothing seems to happen.

Hi are there any mods who can answer this question? I've had the same problem. Have disabled chat in every way I can find and still get chat requests and emoticons. Also even if you don't accept the chat request when you play another game whatever the person said to you actually shows in the game history.

Hi,

If you have tried everything above in settings, best to contact support.

It sounds like somebody already did earlier in the thread and didn't get much of a response

it's weird that there isn't someway to just block all communication. I'm sure a sizeable proportion of chess.com's users would want such a feature.

In my case, things did eventually get fixed, or so it seems. In-game chat is always disabled by default, and I haven't seen any emoticons.

do you get that thing where after a game finishes the thing that person wanted to say to you shows up in the game history?

I mean, when chat was operating, yes. It was pretty annoying as I would decline to chat in the game, and then still be stuck with what they were saying once the next game started.

The only two relevant settings I can see are 'Game Chat' and 'Chat Requests' under 'Live Chess'. I have both set to 'Nobody'.

Huh. I'll go look again.
