Discussions in the forums, ruined by "Top players"

I have nothing against originality, but do understand that many "original" ideas are not only not that original, they are just plain poor concepts. True, higher ranked Chess players should try to be more tactful and diplomatic in their criticisms but chill out, take a deep breath and listen to what they have to say and don't take their refutations of your ideas as personal attacks. I was once a little like the OP but was told by a kind USCF National Master to "shut up, sit down and grow up!".

I once came up with a "novelty", over the board, that I couldn't find in any of the available opening books... a piece sacrifice on move 8 in the QGD Chigorin Defense.

I was a bit disappointed to discover about a month later that Ivanchuk had already played my "new" move in a Simul, several years before.

... at least it was a sound sacrifice...

This was the game:

... I was quite proud of 8. Bxc4, until I found out that Ivanchuk had played it years earlier.

When a high-rated player criticizes one of your ideas, you should first of all consider whether he might be perfectly correct.

There are some high-rated trolls on this site, sure. But there are also some very knowledgeable high-rated players who speak their minds plainly... if an idea is stupid, they'll call it stupid.

It occasionally happens that they aren't knowledgeable enough to understand that an idea they think stupid is better, deeper or more accurate than their own beliefs. In such cases, their high chess rating works against them.  It reinforces the impression of their invincibility in the eyes of those who are mainly influenced by superficial measures such as chess ratings but it can make them look like fools to others. Clever fools, maybe, or just arrogant.

Thinking and playing like a top 60 in the world, is reason enough to still be proud of the move.

I want to address a problem in the forums here:

Someone opens a thread, some guys come out of Nowhere, bashing people... for no reason...

But - they're rating is 1900+, so they are God, and has the right to do anything. right? WRONG.

They don't have any more rights here then a beginner rated 300 points... please do report them, - what they do is trolling, and it disturbs everybody, ruins the discussion, and make people afraid to share their opinions. enough with this weird tyranny of hooligans I say.

Godspeed.

Nice weather innit. Oops

Made me chuckle. Wonder how many “reported” you.

I’m guessing they are probably right. It seems to me you are most likely a creative and intelligent person but that the commenter has put in the hours building a solid foundation of knowledge and didn’t think that you had the same solid foundation. They didn’t need to comment or could have left a less condescending comment but if I am understanding things correctly it seems someone would have commented along similar lines at some point. I think the higher up you get the more you have to really buckle down and study the game like your a pro or in a classroom setting rather than as a past time.

I apologize too if my comment sounds patronizing. I’m actually rated a few hundred points lower than you and wouldn’t know if you have studied opening principles. Just my read on the situation.

Apollo was speaking facts. Sorry. Not trolling. It's the Internet, please learn to not be pissed.

Think I would gave to smoke a lot of weed to be "high" rated.

Can confirm. I’m bad at chess and no one likes me.

Well, in the chess world that’s true. But luckily I don’t know anyone around me who plays chess, so I get taken seriously irl. If they knew how to play…that would be very different 🤣
