Do I like chess?

I'm addicted to productivity. This is what first drew me to chess, the fact that there was so far that I could improve and so many different things that I could do to get there. In a nutshell, chess was one of my hobbies not because I was in love with it, but instead it was my "thing to improve in."

To most, that might not make much sense to spend your time doing something that you don't love to do. However, I'm pretty sure that there are a few people out there who know exactly what I am talking about.

As I have improved in chess I have looked to many different sources for improvement; so many that I have a really good idea of what I need to do and how much time I need to invest to get to the next level. Needless to say, it's a whole lot. It's years of working in chess on a weekly and even almost daily basis! Not a problem, if I really like chess.

So, do I? I get in a couple games a day usually. This isn't because I want to it is because I know that's what I have to do to improve. I have no idea whether I want to or not, I just do it.

But... now is the time of reckoning. I'm not going to waste years on something I am not enthralled with. So, my real question to you all is how do I find out whether I really like chess?

Thanks in advance for replies!

If you have to ask, you probably don't. Just my opinion.

Me too, so yes, there are people who know what you mean :)

"I get in a couple games a day usually. This isn't because I want to. . ."

Not sure what you mean.  If you're not enjoying the game, and aren't being pushed by an outside source (parents, coach, or something else) then you should probably take a break.  This can also help improvement, when you come back hungry to learn instead of going through the motions.

"I have no idea whether I want to or not, I just do it."

This is even more puzzling.  Emotional numbness sounds like low level depression... what other interests do you have, get out of the house and have some fun... go see a movie... I'm just guessing here though of course.

"I'm not going to waste years on something I am not enthralled with. So, my real question to you all is how do I find out whether I really like chess?"

Then just keep it as a hobby and explore other interests.  How do you know if you like something?  Kind of an odd question don't you think?  But here are some signs.  After taking some days off not playing or looking at chess, are you eager to begin again?  To get some games in as soon as you have free time?  After playing or studying do you feel like it was time well spent, like you accomplished something worthwhile, or do you wish you'd have done something else, or feel like you wasted your time?

Thank you for your answers and suggestion. I will persue it. Perhaps I can clarify a little bit, I meant not to make it sound like playing chess is an emotionally numb activity for me. Although the phrase "going through the motions" is very accurate. Chess definitely isn't boring, but currently, either by just being burnt out or because it might just not be my favorite hobby it is just a time filling activity that is sometimes mildly amusing and other times not. Also, chess isn't my only hobby right now so no need to worry on the depression front or anything. I spend more time on Ultimate Frisbee :). Again though, thank you guys for your replies!
