I feel like checkers is more commonly known than chess. I'm not too sure what you mean by "overtake". If you're talking in terms of popularity, I feel like I'll find someone on the street who knows how to play checkers before I find someone who knows chess.

I think that there is a much better change that Tic-Tac-Toe will overtake chess.

Yes, maybe.  I think it has been that way in the USA.  The recent displays in voter "thinking" and the drop-off in math-oriented college majors indicates that the more mindless or more shiny colors the game is, the more popular it will be.  I think Candy Crush is already much more popular.

While it is fun, especially a variant that my son and I invented that we call checker-chess.  Here, you'd prearrange the kinging chess pieces, which you put on top of the checkers when they king and then they move and take like the corresponding chess piece.

As fun as checkers game is, I don' think it'll over take chess in the adult wrold.  I remember reading somewhere that it isn't very hard to play it correctly such that you can't ever lose.  If that's really the case, then it has no significant future -- kind of like tic-tac-toe.
