Do you think chess is a form of gambling?

Does it make a person lose sense of his rational reasoning, due to urge of his ego ?

First question: not really. Second question: yes

1) no, you can do something wrong and don't notice, then think that the opponent was "lucky", but it was avoidable. 2) unfortunately yes, people tend to think being good at chess means smartness, so they feel dumb for not being good. but they should have in mind that GMs and strong players aren't just smart, they put a lot of effort on their game, otherwise, they could be even worst than us.

Depends on your definition of gambling. Are you wagering money on the game? Then yes, absolutely - unless you’re 100% sure of victory. Other than that, it’s just a matter of how much you value your time and what you get out of the game.

Perfectly said.

In the movie Queen of Katwe, Phiona's mother groups chess players with gamblers, cards, dice, etc.

That is cliche. But it is cliche for a reason. It is cliche because it is true.

Historically chess is erroneously grouped with gambling.

First things first.

The Chinese invented paper.

The Chinese invented paper money.

The Chinese invented cards.

The Chinese invented gambling.

Chinese Chess, does not come from China, It came from India.

Chess has a different genetic lineage than gambling. One is Indian, and the other is Chinese.

At the fundamental level, Chess is a martial art. A war game, like Go.

It is a martial art. Probably the oldest martial art, and the best martial art.

Oh they did.

Gambling is part of The Four Vices.

酒 alcohol. That's a glyph of liquid + bottle and a lid.

色 color. Euphemism for prostitution. Prostitutes wear colorful make up and clothing to attract "Johns".

財 gambling. That's a glyph 貝 sea shell. Sea shells were used as money. "To shell out" = to spend money.

氣 smoking. A glyph of steam coming off rice, vapor. What kids today call "vaping".

They are bad in the Ebonics sense. "Baad". Baad as in "good". Good or bad depends on whether you look at it from the Ying or Yang's point of view.

You can "live and and prosper".

Or you can "live fast and die young."

The Vietnamese has a saying. (All Vietnamese sayings are Chinese sayings).

Nhất Dạ Đế Vương

一夜帝王

You live one night like the highest king (before you are robbed of all your money).

A modern day equivalent would be going to Caesars' Palace and live like a Caesar for one night.

Back to the main point.

Chess came from India.

Gambling came from China.

3 out of 4.

slow horses = betting of slow horses that don't win races, thus losing your money.

fast women = I'm not talking about Flo-Jo.

I cannot emphasize this enough.

People label gambling as bad.

Think for a moment. Chess (tennis, ping pong, basketball, etc) is played for fun.

Gambling is played for real money.

What better way to learn about real life than staking real money?

Who is to say one is better than the other?

You pick the games you play and how you play it, and you get the consequence, good or bad.

You can play chess for pride or gamble with real money.

But whatever you do,

Yes, no- it's not really real gambling, but if you think about it, you are gambling your rating on the chance of winning the game.

Anything is "gambling". Crossing the street is "gambling", with your life.

Gambling in the classical sense. Gambling for real money, not pocket change.

Avatar of long_quach

A classical example.

Pool used to be synonymous with gambling. Pool hustling was an art (or frowned upon "art", depends on your point of view, Ying or Yang, good or bad).

Pool hustling died out as the result of televised pool games. Pool became a legitimate sport.

Pool players perform for a prize, like all other performers on TV. The prize is for the performance, not a bet against another bettor.

Chess is a mental test. People bet on it.

What do they bet?

Pride doesn't count.

Think in the classical definition. Betting is betting real money.

As in literally "betting the farm".

Why doesn't pride count? Some people play chess so that they can believe that they are good at something.
