I used to play blitz before big slowplay otb tournaments. That was when I was winning a lot of tournaments. I found it gave me a flying start. I was always very disciplined playing slowplay and if anything I needed to play faster and not slower in openings, so blitz was a good way to get the adrenalin going.
Does Blitz Chess Improve your game?
<<I think it will sometimes affect your chess ability, because when you play without thinking, it affects your ability to evaluate which move is better in a classical game. If you have played so many moves without too much thinking, you will find it difficult to work out which one is better over the board.>>
You see, slow-play otb is what it says. Typically 2 hours for 40 moves and then 30 minutes to finish. So you can play blitz beforehand and then play carefully in the tournament. I remember a situation where, maybe a few moves into the game, I might be out of lines I usually play and there's a temptation to make the first move you think of. But you can recognise that temptation and deliberately search for two more candidate moves. Then you eliminate one of them. Then you look for other, more surprising moves. You might look at the position for half an hour but by the time you play your move, you are thinking properly and well. It's all about self-discipline and if you don't have that, you shouldn't be playing in any case!

@optimissed, see what ding liren have to say about online chess
How do you feel about online chess? More and more top players are competing in events like Chess.com’s Speed Chess Championship and Titled Tuesday. Are you a fan?
Not so much. Sometimes before rapid and blitz tournaments, I will maybe play some blitz. But in general I am not going to play too many online games. I think it will sometimes affect your chess ability, because when you play without thinking, it affects your ability to evaluate which move is better in a classical game. If you have played so many moves without too much thinking, you will find it difficult to work out which one is better over the board.
