Smart people says chess is a great game or hobby. Dumb people say Chess is Life.
Chess is what I do here when there is nothing going on in the threads.
There's always something going on in the threads. Why play chess?
Well I do like chess, I have been playing it since I was four with my dad but after 8 years and 4500 OTB games here the forums are a good distraction.
You know sometimes what sneaky sh#t that goes on in the forums is like playing a chess game. You have to out think the opponet.
Indeed, you never know when the sneaky sh#t may get into you... Or come out. Or from where. Or from whom.
@ Stairway I see that you have been here for 6 years and have only 800+ posts. Obviously you have decided that the forums are great place to spout your thoughts not all that long ago. I have seen a lot of your posts recently.
Branching out and getting tired with playing Stairway?
Both chess and the forums are my escapes from reality. I try to balance them so that I have more than source of stupidity to make myself dumber!
By the way - "spout your thoughts" - very aptly phrased. I like it.
there once was a guy from torquay
who was as smart as the cherokee
but then he played chess
til his head was a mess
now he can't make a cup of tea.
How apt! I can't make a cup of tea. Primarily because I never bother measuring out a cup of water, but that's besides the point.
A better answer to your question, Hessian: I was actually not, or rarely, on chess.com for about 4-5 years, and you can see a gap in my forum activity during that time. I was always fairly active in the forums when I was an active member. Mostly shitposting, as I do now.
@ Stairway Chess.com doesn't give us any info when you were posting. I can look at your games back then.

Yes I do see that you played one game in 2014 and didn't start up again until 2016. Also I am glad you that you defined your roll in the threads with your words in red.
I didn't know that there was ever any question of my role in the threads.
I did play extensively prior to 2012, if I recall correctly, and also posted new threads until late 2011 (until my recent reemergence, to the chagrin of trillions of people, including myself, a couple of months ago).

Personally Stairway I am glad you came out of the closet.
There isn't one bad thing that can be said for playing chess.
How about the associated forums? If not for chess, these forums wouldn't exist. Sure, there's some gold to be found here (such as batgirl's posts), but are these nuggets worth the rest?
When we die we all turn into dirt under the ground, so life is a zero sum game anyway. i find chess is one of the things that makes life exceptionally enjoyable while i am alive. You can do some other stuff like make babies and tour Japan and get a Phd in Math or Economics too, these are all intellectually stimulating... Chess doesn't make you dumb. It's a very stimulating and challenging game for the mind.
more proof follows...
In 1867, Wilhelm Steinitz got in a dispute with Henry Blackburne at a City of London Chess Club game. Blackburne made an insulting remark and Steinitz spat towards Blackburne. Blackburne, who was over 6 feet and 250 pounds, then smashed the diminutive Steinitz in the face with his fist. Steinitz wrote,
“…he struck with his full fist into my eye, which he blackened and might have knocked out. And though he is a powerful man of very nearly twice my size, who might have killed me with a few such strokes, I am proud to say that I had the courage of attempting to spit into his face, and only wish I had succeeded.”
Later, at a tournament in Paris in 1878, Blackburne returned to the hotel drunk and got in a quarrel with Steinitz. Steinitz wrote,
“…and after a few words he pounced upon me and hammered at my face and eyes with fullest force about a dozen blows…But at last I had the good fortune to release myself from his drunken grip, and I broke the window pane with his head, which sobered him down a little.”
Some sources say that Wilhelm Steinitz was arrested in New York or New Jersey after someone in the telegraph company thought that his chess moves being sent over telegraph was code.
great post Hessian and chess may make 99% of addicts dumber, but there's always someone one step ahead of the game.
