My coach has always told me that using a real board and pieces is better.  I wasnt a big beleiver in that until he told me to do tactics online, and if i cant solve a tactic in 2 minutes, set it up on a real board.  Its was amazing how mch more i saw on a real board.

why do you suppose physical peices are better? is it cause there is more brain activity associated with it?

Beats me.  Never really put a lot of thought into it.  Then I hired a coach and that is how he asked me to work on tactics, if i did them online.  All i know is that i just saw more on a real board and pieces.

I like using a real board for a few reasons.

One is I don't want to forget what it looks like tongue.png Tournament chess uses real boards, and if only work from 2d diagrams at home, I don't want there to be an adjustment period when I have to sit down in front of a 3d board.

When playing over games it also helps you to slow down. You can't just click click click through the game. When you go more slowly, you're more likely to form an opinion about the position and ask yourself questions like why a move was played, or a move wasn't played.

But sure, it also engages more of your brain I suppose, because you're reaching out and touching the pieces. Kinesthetic learning I think they call it.

I like playing on a real board with a real opponent,,,,if you have not tried it you should....just a lot more fun, can play for like 4 hours no problem with real opponent....can only play like an hour or 2 on a comp screen....which is the other thing...it gives your eyes a break.
