Does your chess rating fluctuate wildly?

This is mostly an observation after playing 4k games of chess on this site.

My rating fluctuates a lot. I've peaked recently at 1740 and dropped to 1450 in a series short time-span. The funny thing, I don't noticeably change anything about my game. I'm not trying new openings or approaching the game in any unique way I'm aware of. I'm just randomly playing better or worse.

Does anyone else notice this? Is there a mentality or something that would help me have more consistency in my chess game? I feel like it's a mental thing that I can't easily explain.

Curious to get any thoughts on why this is happening.

This seems more of a deflation than an inflation.

I came back after being away for seven years, and after one win my rating jumped from 1685 to 1903. I assume because after a long time away it dropped my rating to a “provisional” status. Idk.

I think its because of the glicko RD system or something like that, you can look it up. More games you play in shorter time = your rating is more accurate. When you first start out lets say as a 1200 and beat someone rated 1200 you will get a lot more points then being a regular 1200 player. Its the same thing if you come back after a long period of inactivity. I dont know much about this and there are people who will explain this better than I would ever.

Maybe you don't change anything about your game, but your level of awareness and calculation can change on any given day. On a good day you may be 1750 but perhaps one day you are a little careless/tired and you perform at a level 300 points below your best.

So yeah, your mood can literally influence your play.
