The two fastest mates, to my knowledge, are the Fool's Mate and Blitzkrieg. The Fool's Mate can go like this: 1.f3 e5 2. g4 Qh4# There are other combinations for it as well. Another fast mate is called Blitzkrieg. It can go like this: 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Bc5 3. Qf3 Nc6 4. Qxf7# At 3. Qf3, you could also go 3. Qh5, leading to the same outcome.

Here is also a very fast mate. This game took place between Gioachino Greco and an unknown player in 1619. Although there was a chance for Black, he didn't see it and lost. Greco played white and an unknown player - black:

There was no hopless situation for Black, however. Black must have played like this:

After this variation Black has a good play and high chances to win the game.

I'm not a chess historian, but I believe that the authenticity of some of Greco's games is questioned.  He may well have made many of them up as examples to illustrate his knowledge of the game!
