First of all, no one in this thread had said chess is 99% tactics.  You want to argue with chess.com's tactics trainer or random chess players that have said it elsewhere, fine I guess.

Second calculation and tactics are absolutely not the same thing.

DunnoltAll i agree with your second statment. and of course your first one is correct, but i was just assuming that you meant that.

Funny, a friend I have that's USCF 1600 says ...

I am rated about that USCF. My advise...do not listen to people rated 1600. We are good enought to THINK we know what we are talking about, but we are really quite clueless.

This is probably good advice too.

Calculation is useless without being able to easily see tactics.

I am confused by the choice of words...I would say that calculation is the same as tactics. What is the difference?

Can I make a guess at the difference?

Calculation is the ability to mentally project forward moves accurately..

Tactics are a mental box of tricks like skewers, forks, pins, discovered attacks, intermezzos, zugwangs that you can use to improve your game-state compared to your opponent....

You might need calculation to work out who will win a pawn race...that's not really the same as tactics...

You're calculating tactics. Something that is made much easier by keeping a solid position.

If you are 'selfteaching' yourself how to play chess, these are important:

1. Ability to recall and name what exactly you were thinking during play, especialy in key positions.

2. Ability to say what it was that you were lacking - analyse you game.

3. Patience and motivation.

4. Ability to look broader.

WRONG!

"Chess is 99 percent calculation" - Andrew Soltis in "The Inner Game of Chess"

All that being said, if anyone under 1800 spends 30 minutes a day for 2 months at chesstempo.com, you rating would easily gain 100 points.
