I see, I use chessbase 14 to analyze my games... Fritz has always been humorous with its analysis commentary.  I honestly can't say I noticed a difference... then again, I wasn't looking.   I purchased Fritz 15 for the modifications made to the Friend Mode play against the computer, found under Training.  I like friend mode because it automatically adjusts the engine to simulate playing against another human "equal" to yourself.  I like playing slow games from time to time and my computer is often the only willing opponent I can find :-)   So, I appreciate improvements to this part of the software.

How many games does someone need to play with "friend" mode before it stops being, like, rated 3xxx and comes closer to club players like us?

Friend Mode starts pretty weak and gets stronger as you play a few games, after about 6 games you are pretty close to playing against yourself.  It's not perfect.  It makes some silly mistakes sometimes, but so do humans.  it is definitely the closest human simulation that I have seen.

If you do lose the first game, I think safe to assume it will take about 6 games as well to go the other way.

I don't think there is a single top-10 player who is using Fritz.

Regarding ASMFish: I have been using it since some 10 months ago. It hits more kilonodes/sec than Stockfish, stresses the CPU somewhat more, and Elo hike? Maybe there is one, but who cares... Their internal code is almost identical, so their suggestions are the same, most of the time.

Zerbinatti's Sugar is stockfish-devel code with some optimizations. I have used it for a while, and I'm not impressed.

Very true. Even to me the evaluations seem a little wonky, as if the engine's evaluation function isn't what it should be.

Chessbase 14 has more powerful analysis and database tools.  Really too much to go over here, if I could.  There are books about this. :-)

Fritz is an excellent program and is what I would recommend most of the time.  This program has too much to cover here as well.

Put it this way.  If you own Fritz I wouldn't necessarily recommend purchasing Chessbase.  If you own Chessbase and don't own Fritz, I would say, "Why not?,  You should!"  Hope this makes sense.

Fritz Game Analysis is very good!

Full Game Analysis: https://youtu.be/6YB2CGVhp4w?t=4m37s

Fritz also offers:

Blunder Check - Very good analysis, especially I feel for lower rater players.

Let's Check Analysis - This uses the Let's Check database to analyze your game, sort of.

Deep Position Analysis - This will look at a single position and build possible variations for ever.

Compare Analysis - Will use more than one engine so you can compare the analysis.

This is only a small part of what you can do with the Fritz program.

What's the release date for Fritz 16?

I hate to buy a 2 year old program, only to have a new version come out the next month!

Official release information:

http://en.chessbase.com/post/fritz-16-your-companion-and-trainer

Official release date: November 14, 2017

Looks like game analysis just got much better with Fritz 16, now has assisted analysis and tactical analysis just like the Chessbase 14.  Other than that silly yellow menu, the improvements look great!

For US purchases looks like (without VAT) you can download for $47.58 USD.

VAT is a European sales tax that US purchases should not have to pay, if you didn't know this is called "Value Added Tax", just another way for government to take some of your money.

I just bought Fritz 16

Product description: "Even with little knowledge of chess, you can enjoy many exciting games, and more importantly, victory, against Fritz. If things don’t work out, Fritz 16 shows you the combinations you might have missed directly after the game with the handy “Tactical Analysis” function, or you can dive right into "Easy Play" calculation training to hone your skills.

  • A host of features, including "Assisted Analysis," which gives you discreet visual hints as you move
  • Emoticons, which show Fritz’s mood, are there to help you"

You're saying that only the top 10 players in the world will notice these changes? Please explain, because I'm confused by your claim.

Did Fritz 16 remove the Chat window of Let's Check? I can't find it anywhere. Did they remove this?

Fritz is still for sale?

That takes me back about 10 years.

I guess no one should mention some of the best engines are free these days... oh well.

Except some of us don't use Fritz for the engine. I use it because out of every program I've tried, Fritz interfaces the best with my DGT board without glitches or random disconnects.

Fritz is not just a chess engine... Why anyone that has been playing chess for 10 years would still be confused by this is a mystery.  Fritz is a program or user interface that allows you to use those free chess engines, this cannot be said for all chess programs.  Sure, there are free user interface programs available as well, they look like Fritz did 15 years ago.

sammy_boi

When you buy it, I assume you're getting both a UCI and an engine.

And as you said, yes, there are free UCIs too.

Personally I'd just get chessbase (yes it's a bit more expensive).

@jkh0208 mentions DGT boards, which I didn't think of (I've never messed with them).

kenardi

Chessbase 14 and Fritz 16 are different animals.

Chessbase 14 includes one of the Fritz engines and you can add other UCI engines, same as Fritz.

Read message #22 in this thread.  Chessbase products can be confusing.

Chessbase 14 is foremost a database management program where as Fritz is more of a traditional GUI that includes a simplified database management tool.

Fritz has more analysis tools, with the exception of the more powerful database functions of Chessbase 14.

I use Chessbase 14 as well, I do prefer it over the Fritz interface for user analysis... I still like running the Fritz Full Analysis (engine analysis) on some games over the tactical analysis (engine analysis) on Chessbase 14.

If you want a program that you play games against chess engines Fritz is that program.
