Alekhine defense in aspect of opening theory?

I don't believe there is a clear reputation to Alekhine Defense, but it is its idea of giving White a space advantage that restrain it to become one of the more popular openings. Every beginners would be taught to do otherwise, to contest with the center. While why would stronger players play Alekhine when there are better opinions, such as French Defense and Sicilian Defense. Therefore Alekhine's Defense is positional faulty for pretty all level of players and only rarely seemed as surprise weapon.
