Getting on chess time

I have been playing a lot with the computer and e-mail chess.  I am pretty sure that OTB games don't last three days Tongue out

What is the standard time for each move or how much time is given to each player for their total amount of time?

Is there a time limit on long games?

Can someone help me decipher this... 9SS, 40/2, SD/1 (5 day option, Rds. 1-5, G/60) ?

I have no idea what that last bit of stuff is, but times vary. I know I usually just play firends with unlimited time, but most people use a clock with X minutes for each person. Like I said times vary...for tournaments you are probably looking at 5 minutes for each person, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less.

9 round swiss system (you play someone with your score as close as possible), 40 moves in 2 hours.  Suddend death after that.  The whole game is played in 1 hour (your time, so total time of sudden death is 2 hours).  Instead of 9 rounds, you can play 5 rounds, but the whole game is played in 60 minutes for each game (or 2 hours for both sides).  Oh, and no smoking and don't cheat with some wireless device or headset.

Is a post missing in this thread?  The first post (by medieval chess) seems to be answering a question posted by someone else. Has the first post been deleted by accident by the originator or a moderator?

It might be better if the numbering does not change on posts when one is deleted or it could cause a lot of confusion.

Yes, the original posting (the former #1, but no longer champion) is gone for whatever reason.

Excellent idea, SoP!!  [meaning, one I agree with :-) ]

let's say NO to repagination.

I switched aliases and my original post was deleted for a little while.

No, No! Let me tell you what that means correctly. There is some confusion here. The tournament is 9 Rounds, Swiss System ( 9SS ), 40 moves in 2 hours ( 40/2 ), and then Sudden Death one hour after the first time control ( SD/1 ). The first time control is, of course, the 40/2. Now, if you can't play the full schedule ( obviously, it takes more than 5 days, perhaps 9 days), you can play an accelerated schedule BUT the first 5 rounds will be timed 60 minutes for each player ( G/60 ). On the 6th round, you join the main group of players to finish off the tournament of 9 rounds---playing the standard 40/2, SD/1 time control from Round 6-9.

Playing the tournament with part accelerated schedule will mean less days at the hotel...saves you money. You can complete the tournament in 5 days rather than, say, 9 days if the normal schedule is one game a day.
