What do you call a GREETER who doesn't greet?

"I can't seem to find a single English word which expresses the opposite of greeting, to descibe what we do when we say goodbye. Any ideas?"

A VALEDICTER perhaps?

The english word that refers to failing to greet someone when you are supposed to is 'snub'. Therefore Greeters who don't greet are Snubbers!

I'm actually not sure how well the greeters are working. i signed up to be a greeter, and after 5 weeks, I've finished 150 games.  Out of those 150, probably 120 have played 1 move and left, 15 more have played a few moves and timed out, and maybe 15 more are actually playing me.  Plus, If I dont move immediately, I get a nasty comment telling me to move. I think we might need to rework the greeter system.

This sounds very familiar. Even though I'm not (and haven't been) a greeter myself, the greeter I was assigned timed out after two moves and never even said hi. If that's what greeters do in general, there's really no point in having them at all. After all, they're neither greeting the new players or helping them out most of the time.

I actually introduce players and help them if I ask, but many of the players dont read the welcome message and some dont speak english.

I guess I got lucky. I am in the middle of a "greeter" game with wicksta85 and it has progressed nicely.

I since have begun several other games, one of which is already complete.

As a greeter, you have one or two moves in which to:

  • promote yourself
  • promote chess.com and the facilities of the site
  • discover which interests you have in common (if any!)
  • find out the new joiner's local time (Mr. Wolf!).

I sometimes use 'greeter games'  as an alternative to looking for Open Seeks.

I take pride in being a greeter
I wouldn't expect there to be a greeter shortage, but I think I'll increase my max games

Yeah, my greeter didn't talk to me so I considered suicide. But only briefly.

I also take pride in being a greeter. The few that stay and play I've had some good chats and games. The majority of newbies I've found to be 13 to 18. Many don't read the message about turn-based chess cause they yell at me to move. But Artfizz's comments were excellent.

By increasing the number of games that you play with greeters in the settings section under the online chess section?

Looking to a reply that may enlighten many of us.

No mystery. Just tick the box that says:

Be a Greeter: I am willing to play unrated welcome games against new Chess.com members. I will help them understand how to play on Chess.com and answer questions.

and set

Max # of Games:   3  (Welcome games played so far : 38)

to a number that you're comfortable playing at the same time (in my case, 3).

I too am a proud greeter and I became one because my greeter was not very good he/she didn't even say hello and he timed out after a couple of moves.

To BorgQueen, thanks you made my day and made me blush. Embarassed

Art, I am a greeter, my question was not crystal-clear.

What I was asking is do you toggle between open seeks and greeters.

In other words, do you at times put greeters number of games to be played at zero and go to the seek page for a game and later return to your settings and put a number of games to be played with greeters?

Indeed. I have the box 'be a greeter' ticked for only a few hours a week when I have time to do greeters justice.

I believe infinitum is referring back to post #1.
