Click on the piece you want to move, and that piece gets highlighted, then click on the square you want it placed, click submit
you can also drag your chess piece to that square you want it to go

It depends on what you're using (cell phone, computer, etc.). I'm using a computer. I just have to hold down the left mouse button on the pieces and move them to a valid location (eg. Bishops can only go diagonally). The (computer/cell phone/etc.) you're using could have malfunctioned or something's wrong with your internet.
Usually I just pick the piece I want to move up from the board, and then move it to another square. If I am capturing my opponent's piece, that does raise a bit of a quandary, but usually I just set my piece down next to the square on which rests the piece I intend to capture, move the captured piece off the square with my piece, set my piece down, and then pick up the captured piece and set it aside.
I am new to chess and this is my first day on chess.com. In high school, I played a bit. Not much though! I am open to making friends and I will be loging on from time to time. Officially by China's history, I am China's current official emperor in exile. I currently reside in Honolulu, Hawaii and my homebase is in the city of Hangzhou, China (which was not listed on your profile page). Please visit my website http://himyaosui.wordpress.com. Please tell others aboout me!
How do you move your pieces? I looked at the instructions, they didn't help.
