Highest Rated Player

The highest rated player here on chess.com is a fellow Irish man AlecKeen with a rating of 2500. Congrats to you!  I just want to take this moment to promote my country as a strong chess playing nation. However, in reality no Irish player (ever or in recent times at least) has reached 2500 rating (national or Fide) and we only have one GM who is Russian-born but is an Irish citizen. He plays on the Irish national team and is named GM Alex Baburin(2550~).

GO IRELAND!!

Yes, good to see alright.  I think that we could safely say McDonnell or Mason were the strongest Irish players ever based on their exploits at their time.  IM Brian Kelly hit 2500 at one point I think in recent times.

Oh i see. Yes, he probably has hit 2500 at some stage. My error. I dont understand how we dont have many more stronger players or many more titled players. IM Sam Collins is definatley on the road to becoming a GM i would imagine. IM Mark Quinn seemed to be playing and performing well but since i havent been to an Irish tournament in years im slightly out of touch with how people have been performing.

My country's highest rated here is only 2342, you should be happy with 2500.  We don't have any Russian-born players, poor us!  Nevertheless we also are a chess-playing nation.  By the way, your flag looks like the Italian flag (the red is supposed to be orange? or maybe it's just my monitor)...

Sorry about that NM tonydal, I was thinking at Chess.com.  Yes we have GM Eugene Torre, I think he's the country's number 4 now (c'mon he's 56).  I can't really complain...  My country is number 36 in the world of chess (just after Iceland--Fischer country), with an average titled rating of 2499, 5 GMs, 15 IMs and a total of 29 titled players.  As of today (2008-04-08), our number one is GM Wesley So with a FIDE rating of 2540, and don't stop there, he's just a teenager (around 15 years old) and a long way still in the horizon.  I hope it'll change, but our players don't get appropriate support from the government (just a little explanation there).  Wink

 YES! Really really good!

At the 'Bunratty Chess Festival' a Fide recognised event, GM Baburin (2542) drew with GM Svidler (2763)! He also won the Isle Of Man tournament in 1997 with a performance of 2827.

Graw81....Ireland has an unfair advantage over the rest of us. It's called Guiness !
