Hollow victory

I have just had another victory becoz my opponent timed out. As he was a fair higher than me in the ratings it meant my rating went up a fair bit.

But that's not how to progress so no flag waving or anything like that. I reckon maybe as many as 10% of my games have been won on time: third where I had an advantage, third where I was at a disadvantage and the remaining third where it was equal.

I wonder what other people's experience is, why is it that so many people do time out, and what we can do about it?

It happened to me soon after I started playing here and I didn't like the rating point effect either.  So I started having a quick look at prospective opponents record before accepting a game.

I also "won" a game in which I was being thrashed by a player whose account was deleted.  A look at his record explained to me both why he was kicked out and why I was being blown off the board but still I don't like those rating points.

Hard to programme the site not to award them tho' (I imagine).

You can make a suggestion to the site for a rating scale because it is turnbased not live. You can adjust also setting on your online chess. Go to
