FIDE regulations have changed.  https://handbook.fide.com/chapter/B012022

Before 2017, only a 2100 FIDE over the board standard chess rating was required.

What do you mean before 2017?  He got his title FM recently!

It was provisional, he got his FM title recently

Well deserved for Canty earning FM title

I didn't think the requirement was ever 2100, I'm pretty sure it was always 2300 fide.

I'm not an expert in this. I was just reading what I thought it said.

You have to apply for titles to get the titles and pay the fees. They aren't given automatically after the qualifications are met. Since his rating was over 2300 in at least 2014, he qualified for the title then and must have just recently applied for it.

Direct titles can have different rating requirements, but the normal rating for FM is 2300 and I don't think that has ever changed.

I guess I should have read the link on the previous discussion too but it looks like he qualified under the regulations in effect at the time he got his rating (i.e. there wasn't a 30 game minimum in effect then, unless I missed it):

Not seeing anything yet on why it was just awarded, just the US Chess tweet on it: https://twitter.com/USChess/status/1501997267326144541

NO ! that rating was provisional and didn't qualify for the FM title.

Yeah exactly not much information, even on his own youtube chanel.

Like I said before I think he is a great guy, great teacher and a nice person in general plus a very strong player he well deserves it!

I was just wondering of the process, because I don't see any information anywhere about his recent FM title, that's all.

I'm guessing, with limited information, that he qualified under the regulations at the time but was trying to get IM/GM and didn't apply at that time, likely to minimize the costs of title application fees, and that he recently decided to apply for the FM title now.

@justbefair, the document you shared says 2300 is eligible for GM, but this is for special cases: winning youth world championship or senior world championship etc. That doesn’t apply to ordinary people, otherwise everyone with 2100 could have earned FM title.

Correct, that’s exactly right.

I'm still wondering, I mean how come no one knows correct information on this !? It seems shady to me ...

We are all know for sure that he didn't qualify by rating , so how did he get his title then?  Might be an easier route he chose or something.
