How do you prepare for an opponent?

I'm not really sure how to prepare for an opponent. I only prepare for daily chess as i haven't been in a chess competition for months.

I usually just check my opponents ratings. Both as white and black, if i deem him week i go for queen's gambit. If i deem him strong, i go for Ruy Lopez. And as black if he starts with c4 i go for the 4 knights

If possible, you should investigate his games, and take notes of his gameplay choices. If he is weaker, you could either go on the offensive, possibly leading to a fast and decisive victory, or go on the defensive, reducing risk of losing whilst protracting the game. If your opponent is stronger, you could play the offensive, possibly shaking up your opponent and increasing their chances of making a mistake, or you could play the defensive, waiting to spring out at any mistake that your opponent may make while attacking.

Check out some of his/her games. Find out strengths and weaknesses? Does this person prefer attacking or defending? Are they prone to make sacrifices to open up your king? Does he/she like to grind out an equal position? These kind of things can give you an idea on what to expect. Also learning a few traps in their favorite openings can go a long way as it means that you can avoid them and maybe he/she might fall for them.
