How important are pawns?

When I was first learning chess, I treated pawns like throw-away pieces, and rarely moved them unless to capture or free up another piece. However, when I started playing against coach, I noticed how often pawns were protected, and how it was apparently a bad move to leave a pawn hanging (The coach would point out my mistake, and offer me a chance to re-do my move).

I'm a little conflicted now. How important is it to defend your pawns? Is it wise to ignore them and focus on stronger pieces?

Please let me know your thoughts.

They are endgame queens if you give them away and don’t have any pieces no comeback
