Started playing chess seriously since last year.I hadn't studied any chess openings or courses as such. What does it take to hit 2000 online?

What did you do to reach there? just playing or anything else like studying?

4/5 months if you work consistently

Took me about 6 games. Had entered an under 1800 tournament at that level competition were higher rated than me and of course were awful. I ended up winning the event.

Took me almost 10 years... I kid you not. Then I still fluctuate to the low/mid 1900s in blitz here.

Could be in 1-2 years or never.

Majority of people, around 95% , never reach above 2000+.

I went from 1600 to 2000 in less than 2 years. I was stuck in 1600 but once I’ve studied a bit about openings I went up very quickly. I really had no opening knowledge prior to that, I understood it is important since I was spending a lot of time for opening moves while in endgame I was much quicker than my opponents. It all depends on your background and the time you spend on learning and also your own chess capabilities. If I wasn’t busy with my job, perhaps I could have achieved the same jump in a much less time (in average I was watching a 10-30 minute video on YouTube/chess.com every second day before sleeping).

Currently I’m stuck in 2300, again I feel I have a bit of lack in opening and a bit of lack in endgame, if I learn them I should quickly go up again.

there is no way to increase the potential of your visual-spatial memory . you can only realize what little potential you have

Roughly you should expect 100points a year gain if you are committed.

Yes, 100 rated beginner will be 2800 rated in 27 years.

And 2000 rated player will be 3000 rated in 10 years.

Work with books

@Shashivardhan07,

Opening choice depends on your style, for example with black against d4 I play my own KIT (no opening book recommends it). I cannot recommend you any specific opening. See your style, are you aggressive? Positional? All round? Then pick up the right opening.

Besides main lines you should have your own pet lines.

Not because you want to crush your opponents with pet lines, instead to learn other ideas and preventing sticking to the same repeated idea. Also it helps you to know how to deal with other player’s side lines.

For example I was playing king gambits quite a lot at a specific period. I believe it is rubbish and dangerous for white but sharpened my alertness, also even with that, in my current level sometimes I win against my opponents (I play it very rarely right now). Or current if against e4 you play e5 then I may prepare for Evan‘s gambits. It is again pretty much useless at my current level because all my opponents know basic defensive resources against it, but it gives me new ideas to play. I have to admit that I lose very often when I play Evan.

Pursue your own path and find your favorite openings.

In my experience 80-100 points a year but with dedication and enthusiasm. I was like 1200 online. I know others improve very fast. Others very slow. Depends on how and what you study maybe.
