people who say chess is a waste of time is a waste of time so there.
How many people think that; Chess is just a Total Waste of Time in Life!

If you think chess is such a waste of time, WHY are you here?
Go do something that YOU think is more worthwhile, than wasting time whining about how chess is a waste of time.

^^^
This. Well said.

What does it mean , waste of time ?
Waste hours in traffic jam ?
Waste hours with mother in law ? ex- lawyers ?
Feeding the dog before Pepette's promenade ?
Time consumption is part of consumerism, which means burn. Burn time or burn forets or burn is waste.
It's my wife, she thinks I waist time , see u ...

People spend their leisure time in many different ways. I don't see how playing chess is bad, especially when there are plenty of objectively worse activities you could engage in. Garaunteed anyone who claims its a waste of time themselves regularly engage in activities that don't necessarily contribute towards survival or wealth (or other "productive" activities).

Why Chess is not a waste of time.
1. It's fun
2. It is competitive
3. You can meet some good people
4. It helps your brain to allow the logical and creative parts come together to form good ideas.
5. It is challenging.

Chess is the tool, men have the use!
As says Nietszche, Friedrich Nietszche, it is important NOT to mix tool and use.
For instance, it is not cold turk which is the drug, it is the use of it who makes the man the addict.
ooops! it's my wife, she says Chess is ***, but it' s not me!
As says Holderlin the poet,
"wo die Gefahr liegt, wächselt was mich rettet"
Trad Playing chess is not dangerous for your life. Live with my wife does..
Life is the way how to waste time, not chess, little bee.
chess is not just unproductive, its actually counterproductive.
Most games and hobbies leave one refreshed and do not require high attention/focus/mental faculties. After a good session of chess, ones productive capacity is diminished and other areas of your life subsequently fall into disrepair/neglect.
chess is generally for toddlers, keeping children busy, past-time for unemployed and homeless, and retired people.
Unfortunately, some invest their ego into chess and for them it becomes a tool to feed their ego by studying/trying to win/etc. Eventually they come to hate chess but need it in order to protect the ego and self-esteem.
best blitz game ever played
Your opponent blundered the dark squares and then got mated on the dark squares, hardly brilliant play from either side.

You know that song : "And now the end is near ...." ? After eight years of playing, may be it's time to try to ...win, just something new for u, may be, OP ?? who knows ?

If youre not saving the environment, helping enable other people to do important things themselves, or adding to the overall sum knowledge of humankind you are wasting your time apparently. Still chess is a fun hobby so whatever.

When i put up this post, I didn't know how hard it is to stop playing chess altogether.Much as we can say chess is a waste of time.....it is addictive, very addictive . You wine all day about how frustrating it is , you even quit but somehow, you find yourself playing the game somehow.
Einstein did!
I thought Einstein was an avid chess payer, I read somewhere that he was friends with Lasker and played many games with him.

Define "waste of time in life". If your definition is "having no meaning whatsoever", chess certainly doesn't come to mind.
Everyone likes different things. What one person thinks is a waste of time could be someone else's passion. People live for their passions.
Einstein may have been a genius, but he wasn't always right.
If chess is a waste of time, then so is:
watching Game of Thrones,
and listening to music,
and playing a video game,
and reading poetry,
and looking at Facebook,
and sex (unless trying to get pregnant),
and playing poker,
and drinking a beer.
What's wrong with "wasting time"? Should life really be only about work and making money? Are we a bunch of puritanical workaholics? Must we feel guily about experiencng a little enjoyment once in a while?
except...you can do ALL those other things, or just play chess.
