How do I become obsessed with chess to the point that I don't want to do anything else? The more obsessed I become the faster I will improve. Thank you

Well, you've made a big step towards obsession simply by joining this site. My advice would be to play 1|0 bullet & 3|0 blitz as much as possible. Those time controls are "addicting" because they almost always end with a time-based win.

That's funny. Especially considering that an obsession is an uncontrollable urge to do something.

Lately I've heard this '21-day' method to create a habit. The idea is if you force yourself to do something for 21 days, it will become a habit.

Personally, I think it is silly and probably doesn't work. But, hey, I've seen stranger things work.

So, for the next 21 days, force yourself to do nothing but think about and play chess.

You will either become uncontrollably addicted or completely disgusted and wish to have nothing to do with the game.

Good idea, OP. Doctors should recommend the ingest of a big intestinal parasite as the best method of losing weight.

I really don't think obsession is much of a factor for improving; heck, half of the people in my school chess club are completly infatuated by the game yet don't know how en passant works.

If you want to become obsessed, just eat, sleep, and breathe chess for the next month or two. Include chess analogies in your speech and writing, bring a chess set with you everywhere, and make sure you let people know that your body is bursting with chess zeal.

If you want to improve, be determined to improve. Play games, learn from your mistakes, and devise a path comprised of different steps you can take to become better. It is completely unnessecary to morph chess into your system if you want to be good, but hey, if it's that what ya think works, I'll respect that.

I am obsessed, If you dont have it you dont have it.

Be happy to have multiple interest's its much healtheir that way.

People that try to be obsessed always falter with time.

I wouldn't say I am obsessed. However, in the last year, chess has become one of the many important things in my life.

I now play chess nearly every day and spend some of my freetime studying a little.

Yes, not really an obsession. But just enough that I've been able to see steady progress in my game over the last year.

So, like Antiserum said, you don't need obsession to improve at chess. You just need to put in a little time and effort.

You wouldn't say, Lee, but what about your wife? Mine says all of us are mad, without exception.

To be honest, my wife does not care what I do as long as I work, sleep enough and keep her feeling loved.Cool

Mine doesn't care either. In fact she feels gratitude because I leave her alone at times. But still she thinks all of us are mad. But can I blame her? She knows about Indian Princes, Sunshines, erotic spam, RJC posts, pdelas, that toilet guy, your comments about your elephant's constipation, etc, etc, and she thinks it's all about the game.

If you need to ask, chances are your real interests lie elsewhere.

The key is to ACTUALLY CARE about the game you're playing.

My suggestion is to pick a few players that are much better than you. Not just any players that are better than you but the ones whose playing style you really respect and you want to prove to yourself you can reach their level and beat them eventually...and limit your games to playing just these guys for a while...

I should have done that from the get-go...I think my game would have improved on solid ground....

Only problem is getting those guys to be willing to play the games with you.

Both.

Your question makes me think of a little boy asking his father, "How can I get addicted to cigarettes, too?" Many of us are trying to quit. Smile

If you've seen any of my games, you will know I've ALREADY done many obscene things with chess.

Yes, you shouldn't play with orifices.
