Huge rating point jumps

Hi. Quick question. Does anyone know why some players rating points seem to jump up so much from each game. I was just checking out the game history of a player that has just beat me fair and square Vlacheslav7667, but on inspection their rating leaps up 20, 30, 40 even 80 points each game. He's Just gained 20 points off of me and i'm a lower rated player. Im sure its an innocent reason. Its just left me curious. Cheers.

It’s very likely that it’s a new account. Newer accounts are more prone to huge swings like that since there are very few games behind them

The more games you play, the smaller the point jumps.

How about your own rating? How did it change during the first few games when you first started your account?

This is a bit of an oversimplification but for the sake of clarity...

When two established accounts play, the number of points won by one player is the same as the number lost by the other player.

But when a new account plays, the rating system gives them extra points for wins (and deducts extra points for losses.) That way the new player reaches their correct rating without taking away (or giving away) many rating points to other players. That helps keeps ratings stable over time. It also helps players be paired with opponents near their level after only a handful of games.

Aahh ok. I guess that makes sense to get new accounts in the correct rating ballpark a bit quicker.

I was a complete newbe to chess when i set up my account, so didn't even notice i was in a rating system, let alone understand it. I must of missed all the higher rating gains and drops. Cheers guys.

@BomberKnocker, the secret behind this is the Glicko Rating Deviation, see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glicko_rating_system#The_algorithm_of_Glicko.

Can anyone on here explain something to me?

I have two accounts one of them is stuck at like 6:50 but my new account is already over 1,000 and I haven't only played new players on that account either like I beat someone who had 1040 ELO and 1400 games and I want I'm just confused why my old account with 2,000 plus games is stuck at 650 but my new account is already over 1,000

Well that obviously explains my 257 point claims after winning one 3 check game against a 1200 as a 621
