it is really sad that he died.

Now the question is how it will affect Australia.

As it is ,cricket is their national game

Unless Phillip Hughes played chess this should be in off topic.

We are immenseley saddened. I've followed cricket for over 30 years as a sports fan and this is the worst event that I have seen in cricket or any sport.

People all around the cricketing world have flinched at the loss. Long term? I think people will continue to play and enjoy cricket as much as ever. It seems there will be a change in the helmet design but either way this is just a freak accident.

I think that with carbon fibre technology and nanofibres there is every chance to make a better helmet.

If I had to put this in a perspective that US people [ and they are the majority on these forums] could understand, imagine the national reaction if Michael Vick was killed in a game of NFL. That's the scale of this tragic event and its public grief. In terms of cricket Hughes was a star of that magnitude  whose best was yet to come.

It knocked all other news off the planet here yesterday and pretty much will for the next week. It's not overboard to say that it is a before and after "where were you when?" tragedy.

The other issue here is the bowler who delivered the fatal ball, Sean Abbott, is also a victim. It was a totally legal ball with no injury intended. Hughes would have faced that exact delivery 1000's of times as a first rate batsman. This time it was a freakish tragedy. There have been approximately 200 years of professional cricket. How many people have died in that 200 years? Including Hughes, 4 people. There were 2 batsman who were hit over the heart and died. That's in 200 years. That is how freakish this is.

Sean Abbott will need a heck of a lot of support. He might never want to play cricket again. If so he must be respected and supported for that decision. He is in no way whatsoever to blame for this. It was a 1 in a million accident that none of the neurosurgeons had ever seen.

Huge shock, very sad day for all cricket fans. I do feel that maybe helmet changes will be put into place, maybe more of a baseball like appearence to protect the back of the head and neck too. I really feel for Sean Abbott, the guy who bowled the ball that hit him too. Long term cricket will continue to be played around the world. People will continue to bowl aggressively and rightly so too. This was a freak accident. Nothing has ever happened like this where a guy has died playing cricket. Its right up there in shock factor with Ayton Senna who passed away 20 years ago.

There is a long way to go in this yet. There will be the funeral. Hughes was probably going to play in the Test Match against India next Thursday. Now it isn't certain if that Test Match will occur at all.

Phillip Hughes had already played professional cricket globally, especially county cricket in the UK; Lords has its flag at half mast.

I can't say how bad this is. When I heard this yesterday I had my head in my hands. That is no exaggeration. And I didn't know him. I am not the world's biggest cricket fan. I watch far more soccer.

What happened was so unlikely that Hughes was far safer playing cricket than anything else that he could have been doing.

RIP Phillip Hughes.

extremely sad moment:(.I have been playing and following cricket since I was 4-5.this was the most tragic accident I have ever seen in cricket. I also kinda feel for the bowler 'Abbott' who will be going through one of the most emotional depressive time of his life.hope he will be able to recover from this.

RIP phillip hughes.

i think helmet needs to be much safer especially for the silly point and short leg fielding positions because an event like that can occur at any time in these positions.
