Get better. That’s a good improvement but still a bad rating. Improve more

You may not want advice from a patzer like me, but this is a public forum so I’ll give it anyway. ;)

The three times I recall playing a 1700, two fell prey to a simple tactic which lost them an entire exchange, the third hung mate in two and got clapped.

Of course, the two who blundered an exchange were still largely superior in general and beat me anyway, but this still goes to show that 1700’s still have serious weaknesses.

And so, up the intensity on your training.

Start with the area that you are weakest at and study it rigorously.

You are obviously better than me in general, hence the higher rating, but I just went down the majority of your latest puzzles and solved them in a fraction of the time you did.

This is because I’ve been grinding many thousands of tactics puzzles on other sites for the past few months, so these puzzles were intuitive to me.

Yet I’m absolutely garbage at positional play, my openings are trash and I only know fairly basic endgames.

Ratings show your general performance, not your strength (or weakness) in a specific area of chess.

One can be 1100 in positional play, 1700 in tactics, 1300 in openings, and 1400 in endgames.

That is why every exceptionally strong player is an expert in each area of the game.

All strengths and no weaknesses.

Look at how I was until recently, foolishly improving at one area of the game without even attempting to become a balanced player.

Don’t pull a me and do the same.

You’re better than that lol.

Good luck, and I wish you well. :)

Dear Netboss12,

I am a certified, full-time chess coach and International Master, so I have seen it and tried it all.
There are so many ways to get better and I know it can be overwhelming.
You can learn from free videos on youtube, there are books at your disposal that can all help, but they are not tailored to your needs.

One of the most important things you can do is to analyze your games! You must learn from your mistakes! That is a priority. You can't really move on to a new, different topic and learn new ideas if you still make the same mistakes over and over again!

This is where a chess coach comes into the picture. A good coach can show you how to study, what to study, gives you the material YOU need. Naturally, it takes time to use everything in practice, but if you are relentless and persistent you will succeed!happy.png
You should learn the main principles in every area of the game (opening, middlegame, endgame).  Don't focus on only one part! You should improve your tactical vision as well as it is part of all areas!
This how I built my training program for my students. We discuss more than one topic during a lesson so it's always interesting and they can improve constantly. I give homework too and the right tools to make practicing enjoyable and effective!happy.png
Don't worry about your rating and the ups and downs! Just keep on playing and practicing!

I hope this helps.happy.png  I wish you good games and 100+ extra ratingshappy.png
