Data analytics are increasingly featured in sports like basketball and baseball to understand the performance of a player or a team, but such analysis are still lacking in chess. With the help of modern chess engines we can know a lot about a player's playing style as well as his strengths and weaknesses, but what if one wants to reflect and understand how he's developed himself throughout a long career?
The following is an attempt to visualize all the tournaments and games ever played by a competitive chess player, using my friend's 688 competitive game records as the underlying dataset. Tournament info and player performance was scraped from chess-results.com and you can view the Tableau dashboard here:
(Link to dashboard)
Through the use of the visualization, I could know things like...
1. What's his head-to-head record with other players
2. How often does he join the tournaments and what percentile does he usually finish at
3. and many more for you to explore!
Let me know what do you think about the visualization in the comments below! Happy to take any questions.
