Hello. I am rather new to the site and joined to improve my chess. I decided to become a premium member as i hear its the best way to improve my chess. I've gone through the various systems to improve but I dont seem to be getting any better. Is there any specific order I should be learning things and any tips you could give me? Thanks :)

Try a few slower games, I see you play only on live.

If you want, challenge me to a online game, 1 or 3 days per move, (We can play faster than that, but there's time for some discussion) rated/unrated makes no difference to me. Maybe I can help you with a few sneaky tricks and bad habits Foot in Mouth

Use the tactics trainer 15 minutes a day. When you play, focus on not giving away material. Also, be aware that chess improvement, particularly tactics, can often come in large jumps, broken up by plateaus, not as steady improvement. You may be at the same tactics level for 3 months, and one day just jump 150 points, and be able to maintain that new level.

Be patient, try to learn one new thing from every game, and enjoy playing--improvement will come on its own.

In order to get the full benefit from study or coaching you must change the way you think about chess.

You must learn 3 concepts and how they workout on the chessboard:

1.Siege Warfare (restrain, blockade, execute the enemy)

2.Classical and Hypermodern Chess Opening Theory

3.Pawn Structure

There are many shortcuts and helpful summaries that I can post here for you that will shorten the time it takes to learn these 3 concepts thoroughly in order to apply them in your game and analysis.

If you would like to know more please let me know.

@Transpo I'd like to see your summaries / short cuts too! Thanks.

I have a comment thread called the "1300 Quag-mire" and the members of Chess.com have been absolutely magnificent in their various responses. I am in a similar "ditch" and this is the week I am changing. Good luck to you!

tidi

i am also a premium memeber and i do the following:

every day i solve the daily puzzle. try not to be tempted to see the solution. try again and again to solve. then i try to use the tactic trainor atleast for 15 minutes each day. and  watch videos for beginners. and if i have time, i join tournements on live chess. preferably the 15 or 10 minutes long. sometimes i dont have time to attend the whole tournement so i withdraw in the middle.dont expect to improve over night it takes time and much practice. goodluck !

@tidi All seemed sensible stuff, until u mentioned withdrawing in the middle of a tournie....that sucks and pisses people off!!

Withdrawing from a live tournament and withdrawing from a moves per day isn't the same and doesn't have the same effect.

If people withdraw in a live chess tournament the only downside is is that there are less rounds ( less people to play)

azziralc

Watch their chess videos here. It was really great! Also try to analyse your games for further improvements.

@kohai sorry, but i disagree...if you enter a tournie you should see it through!

@wbilfc : are you not one of the guys complaining that there are too many stronger players in your tournies and that therefore you can not win? Now kohai tries to help you win and you're still not happy :-)

i think you and I were on different thoughts there :)

I was meaning that the results of withdrawing from a live tournament don't have the same effects to the player themselves as withdrawing from an online one.

I will take them in reverse order.

Pawn Structure - are the terrain of the battlefield on the chessboard (the hills, mountains and valleys) Both White and Black's plan(s) of attack must conform to the pawn structure or the plan(s) are doomed to failure.

There is a book titled "Pawn Power In Chess", by Hans Kmoch.  In it Mr. Kmoch writes on page 107 that almost all openings in chess result in 1 of 6 characteristic pawn structures.  On pages 108-173 he explains in detail how to play both sides of each of those 6 characteristic pawn structures.

Try looking that up.  You can buy the book for $10 on Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble .com

If you like that short cut, let me know.
