So annoying that it's him again
Ian Nepo wins again

Yes, I do not want him to play the world championship match. There is no way he can beat magnus. He just has huge psychological issue. But he just beat two favourites. He has great playimg style( He played my favourite system against sicilian today and had a great attacking position). He does not play boring games. Again, I do not want him to win for some reason

It is still too early to tell what will happen. Only 4 games have been played. Someone else might win as well. I actually don't mind if Nepo wins. If he does, he deserves a chance to have a better championship match compared to the last one, a redemption arc of sorts.
Could he beat Magnus? Chances are against him, but so are the chances of the rest of these players.
At the very least, he might be able not to implode after the first loss, and if he would be able to keep his level throughout the match, we might get a few more epic games like that 6th game Magnus won last time.
But his win is still far away. As mentioned, there are many more games ahead in this tournament.

Nepo is at +2 right now. A +3 should be good enough for at least a tie for first, so he is in very good position right now.

Nepo does have a reputation for losing steam towards the end of tournaments, so yes, he may not go all the way in this Candidates.

Ok Nepo didn't win ONE match in his championship battle against Carlsen... Not even ONE.
NO ONE wants to see Nepo again.

So far, Nepo has been doing pretty well, but it's too early to tell whether he'll actually win the Candidates, let alone whether or not Magnus will play the World Championship.

No, Magnus would NOT be interested in a rematch with Nepo...after all, the WC games between them consisted of either draws or wins for Carlsen...inside evidence points to Magnus being bored by Nepo as an opponent, hence his post-match proclamation about only being willing to defend the title against certain--worthy, that is--opponents, like Caruana and

Magnus himself told before the world championship match that he was happy that Nepo won the candidate instead of Caruana or ding because they would be much stronger opponent to defend

@op Great display of mental strength by Nepo. Magnus should defend if Nepo wins, because defending against same challenger is one of the difficulties he must overcome.

I believe Caruana has the best chance to beat The Magster in a match. I still think Caruana will win this tournament. But the big question is will there be a title match with Magnus? If not, I'm guessing a title match between 1st and 2nd of candidates will happen. That makes the most sense. But then what happens if there's a crowd of players that tie at the top?
"If someone other than Firouzja wins the Candidates Tournament, it is unlikely that I will play the next world championship match," - Carlsen

Seems bizare that he would not defend it. The winner of the tournament is obviously the best challenger and past performance of Magnus against opponents does not guarentee the same outcome. 6/8 players have never been in the WC match before. Smyzlov, Spassky, Kasparov and Anand did not win at the first time of asking either. It also helps the sport legitimacy of titles if we clearly see a champ defend or lose the title. It was terrible having Fischer, Kasparov and several Fide champions all be the champ. He is world number 1, the incumbant champ and not retired from chess. If he resigns the championship but does not retire it takes the shine away a bit. But that is just my opinion.

Ian Nepo could have become a stronger player with the experience of his challenge to Magnus. You can't rule Ian out, time will tell.

From a historical standpoint, Magnus not defending his title would look lame. People will be talking sht a hundred years from now about how he got scared. Nobody'll believe the excuse that he just lost his ambition and drive or got bored or whatever. He doesn't want that. He'd be better off losing it.

And it wouldn't really be the same as when Fischer didn't defend his title. Magnus will continue to play tournaments, he said he's not retiring and I believe him. It's just the title match he's talking about. He said he still has a goal of reaching 2900. Im beginning to have doubts on if he can reach it. But still, it's completely different than the Fischer situation.
If Nepo won I really think it would be in his best interest to not challenge Magnus. If Nepo wins and Magnus accepts the challenge, Nepo will get his arse kicked. He's the weakest of Magnus' challengers, not even making it to tie breaks like Caruana and Karjakin.
If Nepo wins the candidates and Magnus doesn't defend his title, then Nepo is world champion by default and his name will have an asterisk against it in the history books. Especially if he can't defend his title.

True...nevertheless, an unfortunate comparison between Carlsen and Fischer WILL persist through the generations despite no other similarity between the two, if Magnus refuses to defend the title for whatever reason...

The difference between Magnus and Fischer is that Magnus has defended his title 5 times, Fischer fell out of love with chess/was scared to face Karpov/however you see it. And we've already seen what Nepo vs Magnus looks like, and Magnus wasn't really phased at all so you couldn't even say it's because he's scared like you could argue with Fischer and Karpov.
Ian Nepo has made a good start to the candidates tournament, would Magnus be interested in a rematch?
