Ideas for new thread topics

I say the critics of repeat chess topics can go suck on a rook. If people want to talk about whatever, let them talk about it. These guys who come in and try and make people wrong for discussing something are a bunch of party poopers. It's like barging into a restaurant and complaining about the people who are eating fries because you've already had your fill. How egocentric can you get? Post what you want and don't worry if it's been discussed before. As long as your interest in the topic is fresh, it ain't stale baby!

I've actually been meaning to start a thread about chess and mnemonics, but maybe we'll let it hang on for a few more moments.

I thought you were going somewhere else with the restaurant analogy:

"Excuse me, I don't mean to interrupt but I could help but overhear the two of you talking about something a friend of mine and I discussed at length last year.  If you wouldn't mind changing the subject we could avoid the unnecessary repetition of discussion topics.  Thanks."

If you don't want to participate in round two or three that's your prerogative, but where do people get off telling others they can't or shouldn't?

 That's funny and I agree.

One other thing I've wondered... regarding the daily chess puzzle... why is it that if someone says "first" or "first page" they are usually severely punished in the thread by others stating how imature that is? (who are in turn just repeating the same criticisms of "first" from previous puzzles? However, if someone randomly selects a different number, such as 32 or 78, no such criticsim is generated? I've wondered what the harm is in doing something that you enjoy if it doesn't harm anyone else?

Btw, I didn't bother to make sure I wasn't repeating an old topic with this post.  But then again, hopefully that doesnt really matter.

Yes they certainly were taught in schools of western Europe and England in particular, until the beginning of the 19th century, when some religious zealots deemed them to provoke too much imaginative exercise and banned them to the shame of the civilized world for the times to come. By mnemonics I'm mainly referring to vizualising techniques such as the loci system, used by all of the best memoriad competitors worldwide and instinctively by most savants with a knack for memory feats.

3. What will be the next, substantial FIDE-sanctioned rule change in chess (and why)?

I think this should be modified to insert the word USEFUL.

RetGuvvie98: Surely you want the thread to at least get some replies?

Then there are those posters who are in search of information, and being told that the knight v. bishop question has been answered in depth here, they are grateful. On the other hand you have those who post a question about Which do you prefer Knight or Bishop? when mostly what they want is a venue to have everyone read their feelings on the topic, and if told that it's been done to death they often take it personally, and feel thwarted to some degree.

Yeah...or the "I'm just askin' cuz I'm curious what everybody thinks--should you resign, or should you play on?" ones (or whatever the topic may be)...where, as the thread goes on, it becomes increasingly obvious that the OP is completely on one side or the other, and really just wants to take the opportunity to rant a little (or a lot).

ohh I like this one cause as matter of fact is happening to me right now that because this guy tell me to "could you make a move now please"  cheeky bugger.

On  a practical point, new members can not be expected to trawl exhaustively through all previous threads and comment before adding their tuppence worth to be scoffed at(happens too much).Repitition is also often necessary in order to facilitate spread of information or ideas and helps to get them sorted out !

Indeed - we don't want this posting-the-obvious situation.

I think what goldendog was referring to, xqsme, were those that have been referred back to the previous threads and chosen to ignore the info given Smile

like Tonydal said - they just lookin' for the excuse to rant a bit Laughing

That's tenuous at best, and I think that's being generous.

You could use similar arguments to relate anything to chess and I think it misses the point of the request.

That reminds me of an exercise we once did on a training course. We had to propose: "something that you cannot use a paperclip for - or with".
