Imagine this: A war erupted with armies having to move turn-based like chess. Depending upon your rank in the military, what piece you were and the powers you would get with that piece would change. Infantry would be pawns, Tanks would be rooks, etc. People like Vishy Anand and Magnus Carlsen would become generals of armies (and thus, kings). While not very combat-hardened by themselves, they could expertly lead their army against the opposing one.
