I'm sick of people saying , that they know how to play chess !

exactly. OP's attitude is at least as annoying as the behaviour of the person he describes.

En Passant, now the full stop of all human knowledge. Wow!
A thread even more nauseating than the 'should stalemates be eliminated' ones. Here I thought that was impossible.

Most people i know know the rules of chess but if one of them says they're good at chess i'll ask the if they want a game if they don't want one for whatever reason then i'll simply ask them what opening they play.

Lol let's see... Can you mate with 2 knights ?

Moving the pieces around IS knowing how to play chess.Whether they have good knowledge or not on HOW to play chess is something different.
I disagree.
Just because you know how to stair a wheel and which pedals to press does not mean you can drive a car.

OP: The conversation you describe in your post seems a bit pompous. You’re asking a non-chess player if they know how to play chess. To a non-chess player, ‘yes’ is a perfectly reasonable answer to that question if they at least know how the pieces move. To quiz a non chess player on the obscurities of the game to qualify their answer would probably be considered unfriendly and perhaps even a bit weasly.
I disagree .
If you ask me do I know English language? I wouldn't say YES I DO! Because that's just stupid , unintelligent thing to say , my answer would be a little bit and that would be correct, smart answer, YET I'm speaking in English with you.

What are you even talking about here !?
The person doesn't know basic rules of the game, yet he claims he knows how to play it. Paradox.

You need to have some skill to realize that you are actually clueless...

90% will claim that they are champions and will win anyone., also that particular 90% will say they play e2-e4 move, as they only know this.

No I'm just being annoyed with this kind of people.
Even if you ask Maguns does he knows chess, his answer shouldn't be yes! It should be so-so, ok, better then most , etc...

You need to have brains to realize that you are clueless, not skills.

Some people think they know how to play chess, which means they just know how the pieces move and nothing more....
Have you encounter with this kind of people before?
Yes, I encounter such people, in science, chess, music. If they claim to know any of those fields well, it doesn't bother me unless they are trying to claim expertise while arguing against a position I hold in science, where I have extremely high expertise.
In chess, I compliment them on knowing how to play a complicated game. I show them a few tricks, like the Fool's Mate and that attacking f7 or f2 early is a good thing to do.
If they say, "I knew that," even though I know they didn't I tell them, "Good! You know more about chess than I realized!"
It doesn't hurt to stroke people's egos - especially if they are attractive members of the opposite sex!
When they actually don't, BUT they think they do !
Some people think they know how to play chess, which means they just know how the pieces move and nothing more. Those kind of people will argue that it's not just that and they actually do know the game well.
So I usually ask them if they are really know how to play the game, they should definitely know the rules of the game, which they say they do OF COURSE. So l normally ask them ok answer me this simple question, what is en passant? You don't know? Ok . . . Do you know checkmate in 2? Again no? Ok . . . Should I continue. ?
I'm just tired of meeting people like that all around the world who thinks, that they know the game well , yet they don't know basic rules.
