Internet Chess

I have been visiting a few sites to see what they have and don't have.  This one has excellent facilities, is very learning orientated.  I haven't looked yet at how team and tournament competion operates but it seems that on other sites it's those features around which most disputes about 'cheating' take place.

It seems that all internet sites are prone to this, some more than others.  Has this site suffered much from these problems?  If so, how has the site dealt with these?

Upon review with legal counsel, the administration has determined that internet cheaters do not qualify as "Prisoners of War" under Article 4 of the 3rd Geneva Convention.

Let's not forget the vexing question of why women will never be as good as men in chess either, Tunatin.

Haha. Well, I was thinking about it, and maybe we veterans who've seen these threads over and over simply have to put up with it. Maybe it's a rite of passage for people new to a chess site - after all, oftentimes the purpose of the thread isn't really to get an answer on their question, but moreso to vent and/or have a thread of their own. I mean, we can chuckle, sure, but as new people to the site trickle in the "perennial threads" will inevitably recurr.

In fact, why not make a thread, Tunatin, called The Perennial Threads, and we'll see if we can come up with the master list. Hehe.

The aim wasn't to start a discussion about what is or not cheating.  It's something that has become fascinating to me; it seems that no site on the net is free (or can be) free of these issues, but some deal with them better than others.

Some things that people regard as cheating are not actually cheating but the results of the imperfection of the meeting of the chess rating system and internet chess play.  The ratings of most internet chess players go up and down like yo yos.  There are various reasons for this....the amount of games people play, the fact it can be every day and intersects with the many circumstances and moods that all of us experience, the many others we meet whose own ratings are measured with the same imprecision.  That's different from people who can be seen to deliberately 'sandbag' through time forfeits.  Using chess engines but not disclosing the fact is deceitful; but I'm not sure that's cheating in the strict sense of the wod.  Cheating would be a chess engine that removed your pieces when you weren't looking?  Or pulled faces while you were making a move?

What interests me more than these disputes that happen on all chess sites is how sites can cut down the opportunity to 'bend the rules'.  What makes a well run chess site?  Are the users here happy with this one?   It has some very good features.

great questions bestmate!

thanks!

I quite like the idea of being able to pull faces at my opponent whilst playing (See Bestmate comment above).   How about a Mr Potato Head window overlaying the Comments box which rearranges the facial features every move?  Or am i being frivolous?

I happy with this site. Yes, some cheat but the world is full of such people how can you not expect to find a few here. The people runnign the site seem to try and control the problem. As stated above, the site is very educational and I find that helpful too. I'm not too good at chess!
