Is 1700 a good rating if I've played for 4 months?

I joined chess.com in November last year, but only really started playing after Christmas. I quickly got better than many of my friends who used to beat me easily. Now, after 4 months and ~850 rapid games, I've reached a 1700 rapid rating. Is this considered fast? (btw I'm a high school junior)

no you should be 20000+

Okay, one thing, people gain ratings at different times. Magnus Carlsen would look at that and say, "Trash." A 100 who never gained rating would say," OOOOOOOO,"

There are hundreds of these forums, and each one of them gets the same answer.

I don’t agree. If it’s true it would be extremely fast.

If you count the time (4 months) it's good. If you count the games (850) it's terrible. Take your pick.

Yes, it is. It's really good improvement. Keep it up.

it depends on your strength ay the start of the 4 months.

No, it's not. 850 games isn't a lot spread over 4 months, a lot of it is speed chess.

Yes, you've certainly picked up a bit of tactical skill. Now you need to play slower games to increase your analytical ability. Having minutes per move rather than seconds will let you uncover many more possibilities in each position and enable you to calculate deeper and more thoroughly. Also, learn endgame technique, especially K+P and rook endings. When otb play returns hopefully you can find regular classical games. Post-game analysis with your opponent will teach you a lot--they will point out a lot of things you didn't think about.

Lol it took me three yrs to get 1700 so yes

It took me 15 years to get an 1800 rapid rating 😔 So yes you are improving fast. Keep at while you are young to maximize your potential. I started around 26 years old so that limited my ability to be a decent player. Keep it up!

Compared to my 700 rapid, no. But I can’t expect everyone to have as good a rating as mine.

how long have you been playing chess before joining chess.com? if you only started to play chess in november then it is extremely fast i guess.

Avatar of kinkajouthedragon

compaired to my 650 rating that is very good

Avatar of harshalpatil2001

Yes it is considered as very very fast improvement. You have to keep working hard on chess happy.png
I think you were underrated when you started IG. It took me 7-8 years to reach 2500 with full dedication of chess

I don’t buy it, a beginner cannot jump so quick. Beginner, who don’t have a reasonable playing background, will hang too many pieces in every game for a year at least. Your claim is another spam that could result in many others feel they are stupid. I’m already fast but this is unimaginable even by my standards.

However, you might be correct, if you are that fast, then in a year you should pass 2200 and the next year win the GM title.
