Article that says chess is a sport
in my opinion, the article is subjective. it supports the claim that chess is a sport based on its popularity. if the world considered othello or checker or rubik cube or video/PC game a sport then its a sport. its not that i have problem with that though..
one of the commenters says :
Sports are activities involving some physical exertion and skills in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. (As far as I know, brains are part of our bodies and can be trained and strained also).
but, it could apply on some other games.
in the end, to determine whether an acitivity is a sport or not is as hard as to determine whether an acitivity is a game or not. likewise, different people have different views on what art is.
It's not all that hard really. A game is an activity, or competition, with guidelines. A game can be a broad range of things from leisure activities, to more serious things like business or two lawyers arguing in court. A game can be either mental, or physical. Or both.
But a sport is much more narrowly defined. A sport is a game BUT with the requirement of physical skill. So things like Go Fish, tic tac toe, Monopoly, or chess are games, but not sports. But things like golf, darts, basketball, or tennis are also games, and also sports.
Chess, being a purely mental activity does not rise to the level of sport. It doesn't reach that threshold. Another simpler, more common sense way of knowing the difference is that when someone practices a sport, the repetition of muscle movement can result in soreness. It's that skilled muscle movement that makes someone better or worse at sport.
We can say it is a kind of brain sport
