Is chess a sport?

Chess shouldn't be debased with the word sport.
Sports have more in common with snail racing than they do with chess.

Heavens forbid that chess be put in the same category of sports, together with mindless muscular millionaires, all of them doped and full of cocaine.

and reeking of sweat, jumping all over the place, running like canines.
they can't sit still and smell normally of beer and cigars they way chess pros do. different planet entirely.

My personal answer to this is yes, what do you say?
I say....This Question has been asked already.
Contribute something original.

note Americu did not state the question had been correctly answered.
When we discover the answer to whether blue-ish green is blue or green we will be evolved enough to know if chess is a sport or a game.

It may not be very likely ........ but suppose they decided to use a heavy rook instead of a cannonball for the shot put. Would that be enough to convince people chess was a sport ?

Well, in highschool, we had to take a concussion saftey course before we were allowed to join the team, so I guess it is considered one, but I would think that it is not a "sport" as defined by the world.

In high school we had to take a Driver's Ed course before joining the chess team so I guess it wouldn't be considered a sport.

Sport in itself doesn't necessairly have to be a physical activity but rather a skill acquire by the individual to compete against another. So in a sense, Yes! Chess is a sport- which require a tremenduous amount of skill needed to compete at a higer level. And is a damn good sport indeed.

I never used to think of chess as a sport, but I've come round to the idea that it is. The reason being that the more physical sports require skill plus fitness for that particular game. We recognise the need for skill in chess. It seems to me that physical fitness - affected by age to some extent - is necessary. Brain and body aren't separate entities.
Chess is a mental fight that requires subtle physical exertion and willpower. There have been several threads, not taken particularly seriously, on nutrition - and I see no reason why exercise as an aid to chess training is very seldom discussed.
