Chess is like walking.

Familiar paths or not.

Competitive or recreational.

Make sure to choose appropriate shoes.     Foot in Mouth

Chess is absolutely a full contact sport.

The way I see it, chess just an art because all of us play chess play recognize pattern then I make a move, same are not accurate and merely assumptions that why we cannot beat computer. We can win one day if chess became science when their is formula to play chess like mathematic..anybody here play chess using math formula? none right..that why chess is an art, the art of making assumptions..while science is different things..it must be accurate and specific..e=mc2..

My own realisation has come through observe the fatigue that sets in during a weekend tournament or a marathon 4NCL game. Competitive chess drains the body, of which the brain is a part.

The thing is, the fatigure from playing football comes from running around. The fatigue that sets on during the 4NCL, especially on Sunday afternoon, is due to to copious amounts of alcohol consumed the previous evening. Which isn't particularly sporty or athletic Tongue Out

The simplistic interpretation of this question limits it to a mere Dictionary lookup.

A more interesting approach is to inquire whether the current Dictionary definition really captures the essence as well as it could. Regardless of what someone wrote in the Dictionary, my perspective is that:

Soccer or football is an ANALOG sport.

Chess is a DIGITAL sport.

The great advantage of a Digital sport like chess is that interesting chess games from a day or a century ago can be re-spectated by any enthusiast right now. The enthusiast can see exactly what the player of yester-year saw, and can appreciate the same challenge faced back then.

In contrast, the TV ratings and interest level in a finely played mid-season soccer game is minimal to non-existent. During the 1987 football season, the NYGiants and the Dallas Cowboys played a hard fought close game; yet absolutely nobody, zero persons, have watched one second of that game in the past decade. But 1987 games between G.Kasparov & A.Karpov are still reviewed by thousands of chess enthusiasts across the globe every year.

Thanks.

Or are sports a form of chess?

Yes. It's a sport. Glad we have finally answered the question.

blueemu

It's only a game until somebody loses an eye.

Then it's a SPORT!

So sharpen up those Bishops!

If they make chess a sport, then various other would start queueing to claim status, like Go, Nine Mens Morris, Draughts, Dice, Tiddlywinks, Ludo, etc

even Bingo. Ha Ha Ha,

Great to have this discussion, no one ever dares to put this topic on the table.

My answer: Surely it's no sport, not at all, not in 100 years and not in 1000

Regarding chess as sport, I can say that yesterday while directing a youth tournament, I dusted Usain Bolt while sprinting to deliver revised pairings to the playing room to correct an error that I had made.

No, it's a board game. You can find it in stores next to other board games like monopoly or scabble, not in the sporting goods section next to football's and baseball bats. It's not a sport, sports are represented in the Olympics, chess is not.

We could have an informed debate on the topic if posters were better informed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_Olympiad

FIDE has even implemented drug testing that is so severe that I have to reduce my coffee consumption during tournaments.

I'm very infkrmed, thank you. I attended axscabble Olympics once, by your "logic" that makes scrabble a sport, lol. When I said Olympics, i meant THE Olympics, where countries compete against other countries in RECOGNIZED sports. Chess is not, no matter how many self claimed informed people say so. This is simple fact.

It could also be declared a crossword puzzle. That doesn't mean it is.

observe: 4 People on each team:

4,  five or ten minute quarters.

only 1 person from each team can play in a quarter.

many teams in a tournament.

money is involved.

each team represent a country.

also here are some reasons it can be called a sport:

and a quote that frames my opinion in a nut shell from link 1:

"The two different sides don't really disagree on anything chess related, only on the definition of a word. So, I present to you, the objective truth on the matter: it depends on what definition of 'sport' you go by, and they're all equally correct."......"ultimately, the debate doesn't even matter. Because there IS NO ANSWER. Neither side is 'right'. And a debate of the merits of different definitions would be absurd and almost impossible to reasonably conduct."

1. Its always good to get Fresh opinions.

2. the Debate will never end until it is an actual sport. .... (in the Olympics?)

3. some of us did not contribute to the prior Debate/Question. You wouldn't want us to feel left out....Would you?
