yes, it is a mental sport

I am typing and thinking and moving and enjoying. Is this a sport? If so, then chess is also a sport. As well as Monopoly, taking the medical boards, and the bar exam for several days, as well as checkers, poker, and backgammon. All sports. You win.

Actually, yes, you would be, Mark... And by the way Sir... I see you're from Long Island... you should personal message me where from and we should play sometime at my Chess Club if you are anywhere remotely close to where I Iive. We could use more  of the competish, we currently have some very strong players and could use more. AND if you are very close, you could even jog! Haha.

And as for Kasporov, listen up folks...  Unless you have come from a country like Cuba, North Korea, the Middle East, China or anywhere with Communist Regimes and Dictatorial/Supremistist leadership, do not be so quick to judge the statements of a person who has personally experienced these governments. I personally work with three people (one from Cuba, one from China and one from Russia) who have experienced the horrible standards of these brutal nations.  And while we might clash on certain political philosophies, for the most part, they have seen things and have had to endured terrors you, I and most people have never dreamed.

Heres a good link to give you perspective on the amount of people that live in democratic nations vs. other regimes.

Keep in mind to the populations before you spit back at me how many nations suffer from non-democratic regimes, though.

gr33nsl33v3s those lists are created by western institutions. They are not considered reliable or credible sources of information.

You yourself live in the US. The US has one of the worst reputation in the world in terms of:

1) Poverty.

2) Crime.

3) Violent crime.

4) Harassment and violence by the police.

5) Education including student debt.

If you don't find a way to make money in America you are cast out in the street and left to die homeless.

These things do not happen in Russia at a similar rate.

Lumping Russia in with North Korea, don't be ridiculous. The US is much more like North Korea.

Kasparov is from Azerbaijan. In all likelihood he has some nationalistic type grudge against Putin for traditional lineage/nationalistic reasons, based on some ridiculous decades long argument or complaint.

Is cooking a sport?

"Historically, butterscotch was a hard candy made with unprocessed sugar. The suffix “scotch” means “to cut”."

Well, there are cooking competitions, so I suppose it might be considered a sport by some.

Where did you find this definition for the suffix 'scotch'? I just tried GOogle and could not find it.

Was sort of rhetorical.

That definition isn't too authoratative sounding but it was in the link provided earlier.  Also:

If you have to ask if a given activity is a sport, the answer is probably no.

Considering that the word "sport" simply means "fun, amusment", yes, I'd say chess is a sport. The idea that sport must involve atheletic competition and/or physical exertion is moronic.

Google says:

noun

1.
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.
"team sports such as baseball and soccer"
synonyms: (competitive) game(s), physical recreation, physical activity, physical exercise, athletics
"we did a lot of sports"

2.
informal
a person who behaves in a good or specified way in response to teasing, defeat, or a similarly trying situation.
"go on, be a sport!"

I don't see 'fun' or 'amusment' anywhere in there.

I totally agree with Google here. I don't find physical exercise to be any fun or amusing at all...

I'm sticking with the usage that has been in place since the 1500's - Sport involves a physical or athletic effort.

So if I go for a jog around my neighberhood I'm participating in a sport?

If you jog for about...5 centuries -then yeah! Laughing

To me, a sport involves certain skills, physical or not. Please don't drag any handicraft or other skills that are more in the knowledge category here.

Monopoly involves the roll of a dice -pure luck and chance, so no sport.

Sure, somebody might argue that the wind can ruin it for the archer, but that is included in the skill -to calculate your shot with the wind factor.

To be able to read someones pokerface? Not a skill/sport in my book, and then there's the random factor with the cards...no, the coin-tossing to choose which side or who kicks off in football(soccer) does not count!

Finally, playing a video game takes some skill...so yes, that is a sport Cool
