Is Chess Really Good for Your Brain?

I don't watch the history channel, probably because I am a historian.

The Emerald Triangle, however, is much like NW Wash, and has been so longer. Except that NW Wash is still in its outlaw phase.

So Lewis and Clark were onto something BIG?  One more reason to study the human sciences, and spot those trends, metaphorically speaking.

Nah. Lewis and Clark never came any where near Pend Orielle County, nor near the Emerald Triangle. Rather, they wintered about mid-way between the two.

Clark, however, did discover a certain hospitality that enabled him to leave a number of sons behind (or so it is said).

Brains are for people that believe they have one.

I for one am not one of those people and proud of it...!

chessnaivete

Why do you guys know this?

Because they are chessplayers.  They know everything.

Kids that play chess score 2% better in mathematics and science than kids who don't. Hey...

AndyClifton

Impressive indeed (at least that way I won't have to eat crabs and peanuts).

Actually they have found that chess players recalling positions does activate exactly the specific same part of the brain used for recognizing/trying to remember faces.

Memorising = memorising and that obviously takes place in the same part of the brain. Even when you play chess you still use facial recognition during the rest of allday life. Apart from that, chess is a bit more than just recalling position, you should know that or do you let someone/something else do the calculations?

The reason why I suggested memorizing faces is because all reasonably intelligent mammals do it, for example cats and dogs can even get to know human faces (and distinguish between each other in large packs of similar-looking individuals, which is hard for even a human to do).

Surely with a mammal brain and a pair of eyes dogs and cat will recognise their owner and some others of the family but that's about where it stops, they mostly rely on smell and hearing and for the visual bit they rely on movement. Even if there would be a super dog it won't match the human brain, you 're not really waiting for an explanation, do you?

The memorizing comes automatic when you see the same person many times, but if you try then your brain probably tries to grow more neurons and perform more efficiently because it has this vital task to do.

What?

Similar to how if you want to build muscles, the best way is to train moving them in a natural way, not an abherrent/abnormal way.

This is just a stupid comparison. Using the brain versus damaging muscles via false body building exercises. Anyways, the more brain exercise you do the more you develop the brain, the more physical exercise you do the more you develop the body.

As for your conspiracy theories and vague meaningless ranting about politicians, keep that to yourself.

No, I won't. You have a typical politician way of bending the truth with false statement and stupid comparisons and if you don't wanna hear about it just don't read it.

Also nobody ever claimed that you don't know stuff you've learned, that would be a complete contradiction. Hope you are pleased at your 1=1 conclusion.

No not really, your argumentation sucks!

You get an E for effort!

@ewbchessplayer I don't think it is a misconception that playing chess in a regular basis help improving heatlh and brain abilities. Several studies by scientifics shows that it is the case. I recommend you to do some reasearch with the help of google and you could judge by yourself.

Here is a links showing 7 scientifically proved benefits of playing chess: http://www.myfastbrain.com/seven-brain-benefits-of-playing-chess/

I've also found a couple of articles treating of the subject of the beneifts of chess that might interest you. They are in the bottom of this page:

I tried to eat the winning pieces hoping my brain would find much needed nourishment.

Sorry, I have tried every way of eating every piece and even used the pieces outside and carried them with me whilst I trained.

I do not see chess as a viable supplement for the brain.

Or, he may have had too many.
