People generally tend to favour lighter colors for a number of reasons:
- Security: less camouflage in the light than in the dark.
- Primal instinct: people sleep when it's dark and they wake when it's light.
- Religion: scary things go boom in the dark, switch on the light.
- Appearance: many women generally prefer lighter skin because if they're 'ugly' then a dark skin tone only emphasizes their features even more. It's basically easier to hide 'imperfections' with lighter tones. It's called contrast.
- Etc.
All if these things have undeniably contributed to racism to some extent. The problem is with people themselves and their tendency to be narrow minded. The nature of it's either yes or no, black or white, 1 or 2, that's your poison right there.
