i bring this up for debate because ive seen many views on this site on how people either love gotham, or hate him. and i want to see peoples reasoning

Rancid-Knight

I find him mostly somewhat entertaining.

Sea_TurtIe

yeah i think hes more about entertainment rather than teaching, also the openings he promotes are usually sidelines that arent great but he also gatekeeps alot

GothamChess is a great creater and hes very good at chess.I think if you are new to chess(like me)you can watch his opening or other learning videos and I must day that I learned many things from him(Pin,Scewer, fork, etc.)
Sir_Josh1

I just mostly watch him for the laughs.

MoveNotToMove

He rather strives to appear like a genius just because he talks fast more than really teaching chess.

I really enjoy watching Gothamchess, I have learned some general and practical things like don't just capture to capture and make bad trades, stuff like that. But, I just watch him for entertainment because he has that entertaining, funny personality, I don't watch him to learn.

mirroredragon

gotham is an IM, which should be qualified enough to teach most players

Jenium

Who knows. In his tiktoks I only hear him screaming about the rook...

TrueMikeTyson

He's very entertaining

But even though he's much better than me at chess I can't say he's taught me much

Sewerboss

Well the entertainment serves to educate, and he is great at that.

Duck

I only watch him for entertainment purposes

654Psyfox

I say he's an entertainer, which I use lightly, because his content is not entertaining.

hawthornandroses

gotham shouldn't be the first streamer you come to to learn chess, but once you're at intermediate you can enjoy gotham fully, he's very entertaining and worth watching

marqumax
He can be. Most of the time he cuts corners to make it digestible for beginners, but he certainly can

It depends on what type of Gotham content you're watching. Obviously opening videos about the London System, Caro-Kann Defense, etc. can be very useful if you want to learn those openings, but so can videos like Guess the ELO, although less so for intermediate/advanced. He's also not too difficult to follow if that's an issue for you with Naroditsky or similar.

sndeww

He could be if he tried to, such as a few years ago when he made quite good educational content that was condensed and easy to follow.

Chess_Player_lol

he is a good entertainer but i wouldnt really look at him for advice past 1200, once you hit that elo i would reccomend learning from more reliable sources such as daniel narodisky(more advanced players), hannging pawn(if you want openings), chessvibes(more for intermediate), GM talks(good overall though more advanced), and lastly agadmator is good for going over games and is more serious which is good for intermediate

I think he is a great teacher. As he has real word experience teaching kids. As do I. I once coached at a christian high school for two years as a elective choice..... I took three kids to the w.v. state championship. Two of my seniors finished 1st and 2nd highschool And I had one middle schooler take 3rd place junior high. We won best overall team. 😊 I was proud
