I'm 14 I started recently. I like chess but it seems like everyone says you have have to start really early to become a GM. is that true or is it still attainable? I have reached 1300 in 4/5 weeks. what kind of progress would it take? I love the game and putting in time is not a problem.

To be a GM, you have to play in otb tournaments, in real life.

Everyone should play in at least one otb tournament before considering any master level title.

alot of those GMs that are 2500overtheboard have reallife problems worse than you or me.

GMs make moves that look terrible at 1st glance , that are verystrong, others still make the same silly blunders i make.

With all the memorization and prearrangment in chess , its possible ..not likely

Of course it is possible.

There have been players who started around your own age and become Grandmasters. I don't think it is a case of age, as there are probably an enormous number of juniors who don't get titled too. I am sure if you have the desire to match the talent you can do.

Botvinnik said in "100 Selected Games" that he learned chess at age 12. He didn't end up doing all that badly. If you have the dedication, pursue it. Eventually you'll find out if you have the ability to go far. Or you'll find another interest. Maybe you can reach 2500, but even if not chess will be a great experience.

Go for a 2000 OTB rating. Once there (or even before) you'll have a good idea of whether or not GM is possible for you.
