Is Magnus Carlsen a sociopath?

Sort:

When interviewed, Carlsen was asked: “Do you feel you shouldn’t be allowed in tournaments where you can qualify for playing yourself?” He replied: “ Yeah, I think it’s pretty obvious that I shouldn’t, but I don’t have any morals, so it’s OK!”

Does Magnus Carlsen actually not have a conscience? Is he a high-functioning sociopath? Or was he not giving a real answer to the journalist's question?

Potato50012

He is probably not a sociopath.

OldMan-BadChess
Don’t tournaments that qualify you as a candidate have stipulations that if you can qualify by other means and do then the next person done the line in that tournament is now qualified?

To him it seems like easy money. It is his business after all.

in relation to playing video chess he wont have any morals as he needs to do whatever it takes to be the best. everyone bangs on about IQ when it comes to chess ability but I think EQ has a closer relationship to chess ability. think of all the greats it is known that they carry no emotion and Carlson is no exception he sounds like he has no emotion at all when communicating, very dry!

I don't know how video slipped in there lol

Magnus Carlsen is an embarrassment. The chess community deserves a new champion

Fischer was a deserving world champion, Kasparov was a deserving champion, Magnus Carlsen is an embarrassment to the entire chess community

Carlsen had absolutely no manners or morals from an early age.

no social skills at all leaves plenty of room in the brain for chess.

thats how world champions are made.

He might have been a jerk in this video, but idk how playing fast in a blitz game indicates sociopathy.

He always seemed to have emotion to me. If anything, lack of social skills counts against him being a sociopath, given how many of them are able to use charm and charisma and manipulation.

how does that video show poor levels of manner? he was just playing moves, i don't get it.

Have you ever been on the receiving end of losing to someone OTB when you use all your time and they use only a few seconds, and yet you get crushed? It does not feel good, especially when you are a young kid.

really? u deduce he's a sociopath from an interview? U realise people who are interviewed really don't care about the responses they're giving right?

Interviews are always the lame annoying probing questions that are asked every time. Go look at a few Tennis Post-match press conferences, it's like they're all copies.

I generally believe that people care about what they say when they are speaking publicly and non-anonymously. Besides, he seems pretty serious when he says that it is "obvious" that it is wrong to let him play.

whats that got to do with manners?

He's just playing the game.

If you beat a kid who takes 10 minutes on their clock and you take a few seconds, and you absolutely crush them, don't you expect the child would run away from the board crying? That is kind of cruel to do, At least take a little bit of time when you are beating them, you know?

Oh by the way, someone weird person interested in cryptograms and codes and stuff had a similar profile picture to yours. https://www.chess.com/member/soniaisrael

or maybe he's just answering an interview question, and doesn't care about it all that much? U can't assume someones a sociopath just from their interactions within media, that's ignorant.

I am pretty sure that Donald Trump is a malignant narcissist from his interactions with the media, so...

I mean ur point is completely irrelevant. beating a kid with a few seconds isn't disrespectful, mean or lacking in manners. He has little time to begin with so he's playing fast. She has minutes, he doesn't.

This really isn't a point u can make to deduce Carlsen lacks manners.

also Yeah I already reported the account, seems it was closed.

Do you enjoy making kids cry?

Not really, but majority of kids won't cry if u beat them using almost no time. That's just petty. I'd feel bad for a kid if they did cry normally but in that specific situation it's just being a sore loser.

Some kids just aren't cut out for losing, let alone in such a crushing fashion. But in all honesty I'd count it as an unforgettable, crucially important life lesson; defeat builds character.

Maybe the real question is, is GentleChessLady, aka SoniaIsrael, a sociopath?

From what I see in his youtube banter vids, it's just another example of Carlsen's dry sense of humour.  In one vid he says (of his opponent swapping queens) "Doesn't he know I am the greatest endgame player in history?!"

Lots of GMs take themselves far too seriously, but imho Carlsen is a genuinely nice guy with a keen sense of humour.
